P1 V/S40 ones work too. They are better as they are hidden under the rear seat carpet on the LHS by the rear seat squab.
LHS of tank? I thought it was the RHS on top on the metal tanks near the fuel filter. It can be seen from under the RHR fender

hi jonesg. echoing / expanding what scot850 wrote.
PEM for 2004 v70 is most likely on top of gas tank (@ front-right outermost corner). volvo relocated them in near subsequent years, and the PEM in many 2004-2005 cars was retrofitted / moved into trunk.
at junkyard, i’ve found PEMs relocated to wall of spare tire well, and also behind removable panel at lefthand interior corner of trunk area.
also, my best understanding is that any P2 PEM should work. i pulled a clean interior-located PEM from a 2006 S60 and dropped it into my 2004 v70. works great.
best.
I'll take another look ... and inside the spare tire well.

2007 w/ metal tank, its PEM was dangling by its wires on the right side of the spare tire well.
There was enough slack to set it squarely on all 4 feet. Just add silicone rubber.
I read some failed PEMs had flaked metal contamination; can't recall mention of water incursion.

I have seem several at the junkyard that were under the floor location, and they looked externally really rough. I have a 'few' spares of various vintages I seem to have collected that were all internal sourced units. Some look almost like new in spite of the FoMoCo label on them!
