Is it possible to remove the engine of an S70 out the top, without removing the CV axles first?

Post by ThaddeusTheBold »

Hi,

I am about to pull the engine from my 1999 S70 T5. I have removed everything holding the engine in excpt the last motor mount on the passenger side. I want to leave the manual transmission in place and not mess around with dropping the subframe or removing the CV axles. Hoping to just wiggle the engine off the transmission and lift it out.

Is this possible to do, or must I remove the CV's and lift everything out?

Thank you.

So, remove the CV shafts then take them both out the top?

You can leave the trans/axles in place and just pull the engine out the top. That's not how I did my S70 because I wanted to go through everything so I pulled the engine and trans together (I also didn't have good/safe way to support the trans if I left it in place). BTW, not sure if this is the case on your model year (I have a 2000) but DO NOT use the alternator bracket as a lift point. It looks like that's what it's for but it is not strong enough. I used a couple nylon binding straps to wrap around the engine and lift with.

Automatic possible

I don’t think you have enough clearance to get the transmission shaft off the flywheel in place

Plus one with Dr. Abscate, the input shaft needs to disengage from the clutch disc, and the pressure plate is right bulky; the engine would need to go 6-8" to the passenger side to clear it. It might be possible, but Gymnastic.

The engine is out. I had to remove the axles. There was no way it was going to come otherwise.

90 degrees and humid here in Minnesota. It took me about 4 hours.

I lost 3.6 lbs. in that time.

I think I need to hydrate.

In that situation, some folks continuously hydrate with malted beverages.

One of the CV axles literally fell apart once it was tapped out of the hub, so I don't feel too bad about having to remove them. They were due for replacement I guess..

This morning I am going to clean up the shop and the engine bay, and put the transaxle back in the bay (which wiill be a MOTOR bay henceforth).

Things should start moving fast, as far as making this thing be an electric car. Hallelujah!
