It is worth checking Abscates 2nd go at the pump. He found a great way to drop the rear end just enough to access the pump without removing it all. It saves a lot of time. He used some threaded rod to allow the rear to be dropped only so far.

That's fabulous, I will definitely check it out. I really am not fond of the hacking idea and extra especially if there's a much minimized time/effort process without that necessity

Corrosion of the mounting bolts on the rear subframe is the largest issue here. While in there check the subframe aluminum around the mounting bolts if/when you get them out and also mostly at the rear of the mounts at the fender rear. For some reason the RH side is typically the worst for some reason.

Good luck!

I'd rather cut away sheetmetal than deal with the rear subframe.

Tending to agree  haven't yet looked at the (2nd) Abscates process, the issue hasn't arisen again (yet), car doesn't get driven a lot so can likely employ the "bang on that thang" process for a time yet if it does pop up, but I've gotten over the "don't hack up" ... a 26 y/o, not super rare, turbobrick shitbox 8) (affectionately stated that, of course)

If it quits at an inopportune moment it could lead to a poor outcome. If there isn't a lot of rusty stuff on the rear awd bits - somewhat unlikely - letting the rear subframe down far enough to reach the pump might work. Cutting the access panel if done carefully is something that's done even in professional shops; GM sent a tech sheet to their dealerships about cutting inner fender skirts on V8 Monzas and Astres to get to the rear spark plugs. Ask how I know.
More than one flat-rate mechanic cut a hole in the firewall of a Pinto to change the cam without pulling the head, but you had to be careful with the radio.

My '98 was a New York car its whole life and I just hit the subframe bolts in back with PB Blaster a couple times a day for a week. All came out without issue. Might be worth trying to drop the subframe down a little to access ala Robert DIY - I hate the idea of hacking up the car to do the pump

I want to say just dropping the forward trailing arms, driveshaft, and VC gives you enough to then pry down the tank and get the pump out, blocking it with wood. An experienced Volvo tech told me that works.

My write up is here.
