My 94 T5 has oil mist on the tailgatr and bumper after 2 drives of 1 hour spirited freeway driving.
My Turbo is 2 years old, but since I couldn't get a good ised turbo here i bought a taiwanese housing anf had a turbonshop with good reputation rebuild it for me.
The T5 sounds very throaty and I have a weird turbo lag at around 3500 rpm.
Are we guessing it is the Turbo or are the rings shot?

Seems like if it's blowing out of your tailpipe, then either turbo, valves, or rings. But if you're having other issues with the turbo, then I'd lean that way. Compression test would tell you more.
Try to learn life's bad lessons vicariously through others.

valve stem seals are probably not a problem, it doesn't have this "cloud of smoke after idling for a bit" issue.
Since the oil spray is quite noticeable, I tend (and hope) to believe it's the turbo, because if rings were as worn that they'd let by so much oil you can see it, it would most probly feel low on power. I will inspect the play of the rurbine tomorrow and see if it feels still good.

You can buy rebuilt turbo cores from Melett on ebay. Don't have first hand experience, but I'd assume these are reliable.
Though I wonder, if it was rebuilt by a competent shop I should not have failed. Let us know how the play is, and check how much oil is in the intake.
