2009 S60 transmission issues

Post by Phrederic »

2009 S60 transmission issues, 140K miles - Car automatic transmission started acting up intermittently, symptoms slips wildly between gears, engine revs like its in neutral, fluid level OK. when it acts up the car will roll easily in "Park" shifter position. Linkage looks OK. Occurs when engine is normal hot or cold. No codes thrown. Acted up about a month ago. Thought it was just a computer glitch of some sort, as it disappeared and could not get any symptoms during a hard test drives. Been used daily for about a month now, and the symptoms reappeared today. Again transmission won't engage parking pawl. any thoughts.

You can try a drain and fill. search.php?keywords=drain+and+fill+tran ... mit=Search

Or a flush... at this point you don't have much to lose.
Help keep MVS on the web -> click sponsors' links here on MVS when you buy from them.

As mathew1 said - Especially if this car's transmission has never had its Fluid changed.

I would consider the flush method but attached a hose at the transmission's fluid outlet so you don't have to mess with two hoses. This way you can see if the flow is indeed slow. The videos aren't for Volvo but should help.

I've been using the Havoline Multi-vehicle transfluid in the Volvo, Lexus and Honda which are known to work best with factory fluids. I installed a trans-cooler bypassing the radiator on the 03 Honda Odyssey going on 5 years and fluid looks new. I don't remember having to remove the bumper.

Pretty expensive now as all 4 cases purchased was before COVID.

Thanks all, have 12 quarts of 3309 ordered to flush. i assume the solenoid valves are electrically operated. Will probably check/clean the electrical connections when i locate it, may add a dedicated ground wire if it doesn't already have one.

ordered another 12 quarts of 3309 for my 2006 xc70.

update flushed ATF with 10.5 quarts, ATF was pretty brown from PO bought car in may, should have changed all fluids but i was busy and it appeared to be in good shape. PO appeared to be pretty meticulous about maintenance (except maybe ATF) with a well equipped detached shop . In trunk were a half of case of new oil filters, a new full set of brake pads and rotors, new floor mats, (2) new headlight assemblies, and other stuff. anyhow on the test drive after flush it had failed shift issues when cold that disappeared once hot. Turn off ignition and restart and symptoms would disappear for a few minutes. Once when it failed to shift all dash warning lights lit up like a Christmas tree. Still no stored codes except camshaft position sender that is intermittent. Pulled the wiring harness plug on tranny and it appears clean. Checked braided ground strap next to timing chain cover - good. Checked large ground wire from starter to chassis and cleaned and retightened. I looked at what i think is the main ground from the battery to the engine bay chassis ground location just below the firewall, could grab wire and it appeared tight, but to loosen clean and retighten would be extremely difficult with the engine and tranny in car. looked at ECM and TCM modules and wanted to pull them and reseat harness connectors, but that appears difficult. BTW it appears that these are cooled by an insulated hose from inside the car HVAC system. Electrical Shift solenoids need good power, any other ideas to explore.

Just drove it about 10-15 miles, a few non shift issues getting it warmed up. manually selected from1 to 5 to get it up to 60 mph speed for about 2 miles, once or twice in D for auto shift, turned around and repeat, so about 25 or more shift cycles of up shifts, seems to downshift hard while braking. Then about a 1/4 mile past my home it went to nothing, no foward, no reverse, no park engagement. Just let it cool for about an hour after walking home, and having a cold beverage. Wife arrived home and went to retrieve it, no upshift to 2nd in drive got stuck between gears, turned it off, and immediately restarted and manually selected 1 for the 1/4 mile drive home. my guess TCM or wiring issue. any similar experience?

I was about to say that the lack of drive or reverse is usually caused by a clogged internal filter, but the lack of Park engagement which is mechanical in nature is weird. Did the shifter not want to go to Park or it went into Park and nothing happens?

Where is the internal filter located, and can it be accessed?
Shifter goes into park, doesn't always engage

You have to remove the transmission and separate the bell housing from the rest of the transmission. It is internal to the transmission and not easily serviceable.

But I am very puzzled why the Park is not engaging.
