Can't find fuel filter '05 V70 N/A

Post by Faust »

For some time, I have been experiencing symptoms of a dirty fuel, poor performance, particularly at high speed. So, I picked up new filter but hadn't gotten to it. Fate intervened when I left my car running and ran it out of gas. Now it can barely be made to run and quits as soon as my foot is removed from the gas pedal. This also seems to be a case of fuel starvation.
So, today I decided to change the filter, but I can't find it. I have looked through pictures on the net and it is shown just ahead of the right rear wheel. All I can find there is an empty space, possibly of correct size. I have an '04 V70 and checked that, no filter in the expected location. I am working on the ground with the aid of a jack stand, so my powers of observation are limited. Can anyone point me to the filter? Is it on the left rear rather than the right? I recall changing one of these years ago, but don't recall my method.

My 04 S60 2.4 non-turbo doesn't have a serviceable fuel filter. Yours probably doesn't. The filter is blatantly obvious in the location you described on my 04 XC70.

Your issue sounds like a possible vacuum leak. Check the obvious for fuel and air. Let the car sit overnight and you can check using a rag if you still have gas present at the rail Schrader. Check the codes.

Much of my time during the job is spent hauling things up and down the stairs to the basement or in and out of the storage shed, or running back downstairs when I realize I need something else,or taking a break from standing out in the sun,or using flashlights or work lamps when it gets dark.

If the car ran dry of fuel, the fuel pump may have burned up, and is very weak now.

Run a fuel pressure test with a gauge to check that pump, per the above

You may have a PZEV car. These were sold primarily in MA and CA. If so, your car won't have a replaceable fuel filter. You can tell by the VIN and engine code, let me dig this up.
But a really easy way to tell is if your car has a second cat built into the exhaust manifold, then it's a PZEV.

Good luck getting it going again!

Yesterday I ran a "test" with a roofing nail at the Schrader valve, got almost nothing. I may pull out my fuel pressure tester later today, but think I know what I am going to find.

If it doesn't have a replaceable filter, what does it have. Is there a filter in the tank preceding the pump? Hate to think of debris having been washed into the injectors? Help me out here, as you can see from my cars list, I am a "points and carburetor" kind of guy.

Let me see what I can find, it's been a long time since we owned one of these. In the meantime, can you confirm that you have a PZEV version?

My driver, and both of my "parts cars" appear to be PZEV cars, the 6th and 7th digit of all 3 VIN are 64. None have a filter in the expected place. So, now the fuel pump is the "usual suspect". Considering the $500 quoted by my FLAPS I have to consider swapping one from a parts car.
