10 ton hydraulic gear puller from Harbor Freight worked for me. Someone had filled the splines with some type of adhesive as if they were trying to fix a 99+ axle-ping on our 98. Then a complicated process involving using a chain wrench, two feet, both hands, a 20 inch pair of channel-locks, and all my body weight to get an M22 die started to repair the threads ruined by trying to hammer the axle out (despite threading an axle nut on).

Volvo used a glue type product to stop spline clicking when customers complained about it. Makes it a devil to remove and axle with that in place as you found out.

So, I know I am just procrastinating and not doing the important jobs, but whatever. Put a small sub (Pioneer TS-WX010A) in the rear. For now I just wanted to see if it works and how good. First car I am doing some sort of speaker overhaul to. For me this is fine, and I think it will not be in the way back there. Didn't even fit under the seat as these typically should.
Now, someone already had power (split from the blower motor) and some other cables back there, so that made it easier. Still need to get the rca cable unter the rear carpet somewhere.

Edit: also replaced brake fluid, as it was noted as mostly bad last checkup.

Regarding distributors, the last one I replaced (bosch) I tried to clean the contacts and it honestly looks pretty good and solid still. I kept it for a rainy day, but really - could it be reused for an extended period? Just curious, if the contacts are not worn out, are there other considerations?
(You know, keeping the ex as a spare ;) )
