Rear exhaust bracket separated.

Post by Navy »

Good evening everyone, hopefully someone may have had this issue and successful repair.
My 1994 850 GLE is due for its annual MOT (UK London) at 79,000miles. I noticed a small rattle last year in the rear but convinced myself it was something in the cargo area which today I discover it was not. The vey last bracket near the tailpipe has two rubber hanging supports connect to a tubular bar which is welded onto a metal plate on the exhaust pipe.
The weld between the metal bar and metal plate has come apart and I am hoping there maybe a simple fix.
The cost quoted to weld it back together is roughly £90 + vat. I think the cost is a little steep but ramp time is the issue.
I have never welded anything before but tempted to purchase a mig welder on ebay and have a go if its straightforward. I have no idea which make of welder or power output I should consider or if its even possible to weld back together.
Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.
Many thanks
Navy

There has been these kind of bolt on adapters to replace rusted brackets.

But if you mean the the actual bracket at the car then its different story and i propably would screw it in place.

if you never welded before, chances are your success will be mediocre at best. But fromma DIY approach you can learn something new.
I'd pay someone to weld it on, though.

Volvo has a replacement bracket but at a ludicrous price:

If I recall I bought one of these and it had too large a diameter for the OE system I had on the car!

The other bracket that mounts to the car is this part:

Which at less than half the price almost makes it feel like a bargain!

That is exactly what I would do. 10 mins and it is done, just as long as the tailpipe itself is sound from the muffler back.

Thank you all so much for taking the time to reply.
I initially thought this was going to be a headache to get sorted but I am so glad I posted the question as its a simple solution. I looked at the different options and decided on the simple bracket as in the FCP image. Cost here in UK £5.99 so not bad to be fair.
I was tempted with the Volvo oem replacement bracket but the cost was not justifiable in my opinion.
Once again thank you all for the links and advice on the repair, I am very grateful that it will be a simple fix.
Kind regards

To Xanthefin and all.
I purchased the repair bracket here in the UK but I've just noticed your image has two hangers on the right and one on the left. The bracket I purchased only has one hanger on the right and one hanger on the left.
Have I missed something here? I would post a link to the site I purchased the bracket but for some reason I'm unable.
Kind regards
