Is this motor mount shot?

Post by Redbox »

So, 2004 V70R m66, high mileage. So, I started getting a clunk up front unless I let the clutch out very gently. Only happens when shifting. It finally became a pretty loud, metallic "Clank" sound. I figured it may be a motor mount, but then worried that maybe I had a ball joint going bad, so I took it off the road at that point. Looking at the right front, I can't find any problem with the ball joint or anything else. Today I dug in there to check the passenger side motor mount and it looks like it is collapsed to me, but I don't have a good one to compare to. Could this be the source of my clank?
Here's a pic. Let me know what you think. Thanks for any input.

Yes, it is done.

Use only Volvo or Hutchinson.

Corteco has a good name, but the Corteco engine mount is made in China, good or not, idk. Maybe someone can chime in.

Thanks for that. Good to know. I'm on a budget, so decent alternatives are welcome. I'll start checking around.

That gap you point out is not relevant. Place a floor jack under the engine oil pan (with a piece of wood between them to spread the load) ant that end of the engine and raise the engine a little and then look for a gap appearing between the rubber position and the bottom plate of the mount. Failure of the mount is usually because the bonding material fails between the two. Maybe in the US Hutchison is still available, but their products are getting hard to find up here or my usual places in the US. Good products that were OEM at one point.

Thanks Neil, I'll check that tomorrow. So far it looks like IPD has the best price on Hutchinson.

Check around but I suggest the following...
- Rmeuropean
- FCPEuro
- Autohausaz
- eBay has good used and new parts that you have to look for. Just stay away from no name stuff.

So I jacked up the engine and this is what the mount looks like. Some separation, but I don't see anything coming apart. In the resting position it looked like it was sitting pretty low compared to pics I've seen of good ones.

It is getting pretty toasty. Still attached for now, so time to order one and fit before it fails.

I guess I need to go back to searching for my clank. I've been without my baby for far too long.

As mentioned above, when searching for part price, let's say Hutchinson engine mount (30748811), look around.

Currently...
- FCP ~$132
- Rmeuropean ~ $45
- Autohausaz ~ $45

So FCPEuro pricing is probably typo error...
