POLL: Which issue caused your volvo 850 to stall?

Post by smigg21 »

For 2 ( :!: EDIT: 3) weeks now i've been trying to diagnose & fix my '94 850 turbo (250+K miles) from stalling at low rpm's, i.e. wide turns, stop signs, at idles, etc. The car would keep alive if i put it in Neutral and gave it gas (while holding the brake for good measure  ). At times when it would stutter, i'd give it gas, and it would stay alive as best it could. It would, eventually, stall, and only restarting at random intervals (sometimes 5 min, sometimes 3 hours).

I'm getting 1 code on the CEL (BTW i have OBDII, Thanks for the early implementation volvo  )
1. P0103 - Mass Airflow Sensor(MAF) or VAF A Circuit High Input

:!: :!: EDIT:
Since opening this thread, i've done the following:
- Cleaned ETM/Throttle Body
- Replaced any/all broken vacuum hoses (just 1)
- CLeaned MAF, then Replaced. Also Volt tested connections(wire clip) according to Volvo 850 Manual i found on this site.
-Replaced cables/wires, dist cap, and Spark PLugs
- New Battery
- Recent PCV cleaning (10K ago)
- Replaced TPS (Throttle Position Sensor)
- Checked/Cleaned K&N Air Filter
-Replaced Fuel Filter
- Replaced Fuel Pump
-Replaced Fuel Pump Relay

I'm out of ideas. I've read over, and over, and over that people have this stalling problem when the car sits at low idle, or coming around corners, or stopping at lights. I've tried eveything those posts have told me as evidenced above. My only option now, aside from your wisdom and insight, is to have the dealership diagnose the problem, or attempt to while they $$$ rack up the bill.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

P.S.
Had stalling issue about 6 months ago. While yes it was stalling, it had different specific conditions which lead to the discovery of a colgged PCV system. As expected, full PCV cleaning was done then, so i highly doubt its related now.

If theres oil all over the the top your filler cap is likely blown . Could also be a good time to change your pcv .

I would firstly pull your plugs out and have a look at them . Dunking it all in oil wont have done the leads any good . Clear the oil out before you pull the plugs tho lol .

Failing leads caused mine to lose power and occasionally stall . Start off with the simple things first .

PCV has been cleaned within 10k miles, and oil cap and seal have been replaced.

My first guess is that the camshaft cover seal is leaking the oil. The oil may be causing a short on the spark plug wires, causing the rough running. I'd say the first order of business is to find and stop the oil leak.

Hy
I think that the problem is in the sensor that calculates how much air the engine needs proportionally to the Air mass (Mass Airflow Sensor(MAF) - located under Air filter), try to replace...

UPDATE:

Ok, here I am, 3 days and $150 later, and the volvo dealership has finally gotten around to "diagnosing" the 850 stalling issue. According to the "experts" the reason the car is stalling, witout question, is due to a :!: BAD REAR OXYGEN SENSOR. Now, i once again turn to you for your input. I've read (on a few forums) that the rear O2 sensor doesnt affect air/fuel mixture, which if it is the case, wouldnt be stalling the car and basically means im getting hosed by the dealer for a part($280) and estimated labor($100). Does this seem like it would/could be the culprit?? please help, considering the $150 for diagnosis, this "possible" fix could cost me more than $500! I'll be doing research on fcp and others to find best price and ill probably attempt to do this myself first. once again, any input would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. Furthermore, why wouldn't I get a bad O2 sensor code via OBD II, im still only getting MAF code too high???? The dealer says, according to his diagnostic system, the rear O2 sensor code is being pulled. (which, if indeed that is the case, begs one to wonder WHY THE HELL I GET CHARGED FOR 2 HOURS OF LABOR IF THEY EASILY JUST PULLED A CODE!!) :x

$150 for a code pull is way too high. Try to negotiate with the service manager. If he wont budge, tell him you want to talk to corporate.

You should be able to do the sensor yourself.

Did you get the oil leak fixed?

UPDATE!

Couldnt get the dealer down any lower, he just rambled about checking the distributer cap and spark plugs and MAF to justify the 2 hours of labor. $160 after taxes. Ordered new rear oxygen sensor from IPD ($130), arrived thursday, installed today (Saturday) and guess what? The car still stalls.

I'm really desperate, at this point im out of options. please help if u know what may be causing this. I'm going to start looking at other vehicles tomorrow to get a heads start in the event no solution prevails. I cant take back to dealer, they'll hose me $500 plus just for checking it and "guessing" at the problem. Once again, please help.

I saw your list of ignition parts you replaced. Have you replaced the ignition coil?

How about the fuel pressure regulator?

So Im sorry to hear about your issues of stalling.... I recently purchased a '94 850 wagon non turbo and had stalling issues all over the place. Here is what I did....
replaced O2 sensor, fuel filter, rotor cap, plug wires and plugs, air filter etc. full tune up, engine coolant sensor, mass air meter, cleaned throttle body completely with new gasket, replaced vaccuum hose connections to the vaccuum tree, btw... my throttle body was completely dirty. Take the throttle body completely apart and clean the vaccuum tree out as well as everything else with throttle body cleaner. Dont forget the Idle air control mine was nasty and once I sprayed that out it was better, Lastly believe it or not since I replaced the fuel pump relay I have not had any stalls. Feel free to ask me more if you need.....Jason
