How is the handling affected by a bad Trailing Arm Bushing?

Post by AVOIT17 »

Does anyone has experienced an effect on the way the Volvo P3's (XC70, XC60, etc...) handle when the trailing harm bushing is failing in some ways?

I have a handling issue with a 2011 XC70 (66,000 miles) that seem to be coming from the rear of the car. When going over changes in road surfaces the rear feels like swinging slightly - a mushy movement like a boat on water. It is not acute, but I am a sensitive driver and I want to correct this issue.

Since the trailing arm bushings on these models are prone to fail I figure it might be causing this weird handling issue. Otherwise I am thinking it could be the subframe bushings.

I never hear about handling effects on Volvos from a bad trailing harm bushing, just noise issues (squeaks usually).

From reading this article - It appear that a bad trailing arm bushing can cause the handling symptoms I am experiencing: https://eeuroparts.com/blog/symptoms-of ... MvLoJiTM3h

Anyway I am interested in getting a feedback from Volvo drivers that have had such an experience.

.
Lift the rear and do a shake down. I'm thinking worn shocks first rather than a bushing. Any mushy boat like feel, kind of like loosing your balance is more shock related than a bushing which should shift abruptly or make noise. Won't rule the bushing out however.

The car has new shocks, new struts, new control arms, new torsion bars linkages, and new front springs, ...all strut related components are new.

Thanks for the reply!

I replaced the trailing arm bushings and the upper control arm bushings on the rear of my P2 xc70 after having replaced all shocks and struts and front control arms.
I was too having a loose rear end feel when cornering. The upper control arm bushings were more worn then the trailing arm bushings. But I did this at 200k miles.
Very happy with the results including the upgrade to s v70r rear swaybar. Drive it 2x per week over the Sierra Nevada mountains.
