I'm starting to wonder if the noise I'm hearing is axle ping. Some of the descriptions I've seen seem to fit.

Could be. A new bolt from Volvo is about $10 CDN ($7 US) from on line suppliers here. Worth trying to replace it. Also worth checking the issue is absolutely coming from the front of the car.

Also worth checking the subframe bushes are not separated

If you change the axle bolt, it may be worth checking the support bearing has not gone bad. Just had to do the one on my P80 V70R as it made a strange noise, but not a clunk for sure.

I'm going to check the front axle bolts, the rear driveshaft universal and the subframe mounts. I'm running out of good weather, need to find the issue soon.

that mount is not collapsed, when they fail the lower bolt becomes partly obscured.

tie rod ends and ball joints make more of a clicking noise when failing.

try a load test, someone who knows how to drive clutch...foot on brake, release clutch and watch for movement.

A clunk when car starts to lurch fwd can be the upper strut bearing, jack front wheels off the ground, run the engine and have someone turn the steering side to side slowly, put your hand on the top rubber bushing...if its bad you will be able to feel it clocking or slight jerking.

remove wheels and look at the control arm bushings.

get on it, weather here in maine is 33F tonight.
