Last week, the T5 had the alternator light going on intermittently, which I attributed to a bad ground somewhere. Now it looks like it has a parasitic draw, too. When I went to check on it today, the nearly new battery had 5 volts! Would a bad ground cause the battery to draw down like that?

If the diodes short to ground the alternator can pull 100s of milliamperes or even more, and run down a battery dead in a day or two. Which steering rack are you going to use?

The big local supplier uses BBB racks, if I recall correctly.

I bought a 1997 850 T5 a couple of days ago for $400.00. It's a beater but starts and runs reasonable well....turbo works etc...PVC clogged and missing the headlight assembly both sides. So I will be in the market for them if anyone has a pair to sell. I'd like to have glass lens if possible. Also will need suspension and the PVC hose kit. I'm sure there will be more to repair but I think I have a diamond in the rough.

That's a steal! I bought my 1998 T5 for $450, but it needs a new steering rack. So far, I've gotten by with occasional top-offs.

The clay bar is a great tool, but just make sure you buy a good one. I made the mistake of buying that Chinese knock-off 3M stuff on Amazon... never again! Buy a reputable brand like Mother's, Meguiar's, or Griot's. I have some thick overspray, so I'm probably going to need to go over it again, but on the lighter parts it worked great. Definitely something to try out. You'll never believe how rough your paint is until after you clay it!

What did the cheap stuff do? I've got one major brand and a package of Amazon clay, but I have actually used either yet

Plumbers Putty from the hardware store will polish old paint. It is cheap. Just takes lots of rubbing.

It just didn’t do too much of anything. Needs to be softer to actually grab contaminants.

Best to use blue box Volvo on the PVC, just in case you keep the car a year or 2. Aftermarket stuff tends to not do well there, and in case it has been missed, avoid URO anything, always.
850 headlamp assemblies are usually OK used, unlike our 70 series cars that lose the reflector coating pretty quickly. TYC and Depo are good aftermarket - but pricey. Do a junkyard crawl ?
An alternate suggestion for used parts would be Robert Spinner, check out his Y/T vids for repair hints, he loves junkyard runs and will look for things if there aren't any yards local. His cell number is in the comments section and he lists parts on his website https://robertdiy.com/
