2008 S40 2.4i - Key Fob Issue
Yesterday, one of my key fobs suddenly stopped working. I’ve already replaced the battery, but it didn’t fix the problem. The fob still starts the engine, but it no longer locks/unlocks the doors or the trunk. If I manually lock the doors before closing the driver’s door and then use the mechanical key to open it, the alarm goes off. My other key fob works fine, so I’m curious if anyone has encountered this before or knows a fix. Any advice would be appreciated!

1) Swap the battery from the working unit to the non-working unit. Sometimes new batteries are dead on arrival.
2) Look closely at the contacts for the battery - they can be bent inward towards the battery ever so slightly, and may thereby make better contact.
3) If the fob starts the engine, that means that your grain-of-rice transponder (its in the protruding "key" part of the keyfob) is good, but the electronics or buttons may be bad. Can you approach your locked car with the keyfob in your pocket, and unlock it by pulling on the driver's door handle without touching the keyfob? If this works with the good keyfob, but not the bad one, you may have a circuit board gone bad.
4) It is possible (but unlikely) that your car has forgotten the "bad" keyfob, this likely involves a dealer.
5) An option may be to "clone" the working key at a locksmith that does car keyfobs, which means you lose the joys of individual memory seat settings and memory rear-view mirror settings that adjust the car to the driver, but this avoids paying any more than you pay the locksmith. No dealer required, as the car sees one key, but you have two physical keys. (I was disappointed to find that my v50 did not have the "memory seat" and "memory rear-view mirror option like my v70 did, and it is the little things like this that made the v50 seem far less "luxury" than the v70 for me.)

1982 240DL: Drove it 32 years and 1.5 million miles (sold, even still had mint leather!)
2001 v70 2.4T: The most expensive $1500 car I ever bought ("Volvo Turbo" - what an oxymoron!) (sold)
2004 v70: Far less fatally-flawed v70 - It served well (sold)
2010 v50: Smaller, slightly sportier wagon. Its got a spoiler, so I upgraded with sway bars!

Our P1 came with 3 keys and all start but 2 are useless as remotes. This is a common problem and can't be cloned so new key and programing is in order. Yaggar is MVS resident specialist on this matter.
