04 volvo xc70 car dies

Post by famfeld »

My son took my 04 Volvo xc70 to college and he didn't want to pay the $180 for a parking pass, assuring me that there's plenty of free parking. To his credit he got out of a few tickets and was kind of dealing with a 20 min bus ride to acess the car on weekends. For most of the semester this seemed to be working, but around 10 days ago it ended up getting towed. Driving home from the tow impound lot, it sputtered and died as he pulled up to a red light. He called me on video call and it would crank but not start. He pushed it to the side of the road, then 1/2 an hour later it started and he drove it back to the off-campus parking spot. For cristmas break, I drove the 2 hour drive to meet him, so I could follow him back in case it died again. I drove his car for 15 min and when we got off the highway to stop at a shopping center it died. It would crank and sputter a bit but wouldn't start. I would thing the fuel pump would have gone bad, but it smells like fuel. It will start some then die right away. I got AAA to tow it the 99 miles to my house (100 miles free for AAA plus memebers). Just now it started, but when i put it in gear it died right away and I couldn't get it into the driveway.

I still think it might be the fuel pump, but before I spend $280 on a new one, I would like to see if anyone had any ideas, since the smell of fuel is throwing me off. 100K and 5 years ago, not long after buying the car, I put some sealant on the fuel pump plastic bracket since it was leaking and smelling like fuel. That has held and I haven't had any problems with that. I don't think that is related, but thought I would mention it.

Any ideas greatly appreciated. Happy Holidays!

Famfeld

Is it only starting when cold and dying or not starting when hot?

Are you getting fuel pressure at the rail or injectors?

Does the 04 XC70 have a PEM (fuel relay)? My thinking is possibly the fuel pressure is dying off, which could be an electrical/electronic device failing when warm?

Look into PEM.
If you have a spare, then it is easy swap, depending on the location.

What and where is the PEM? It doesn't seem related to engine temp. Strong smell of fuel still

Your car doesnt have a PEM or a fuel pressure sensor. Runs at full duty.

I’m thinking vacuum leak. Causing it to run rich and reek of fuel? Check the purge valve hose tree that goes up to the intake manifold. Change fuel filter for giggles. I’ve heard of contaminated fuel/tanks causing it too. Crank position sensor maybe, check the codes.

He did flood the engine cranking it so much, that made my engine bay smell for a week when I flooded mine.

Should read it with VIDA.

Idk about 2004 XC70 but my 2004 V70 has a PEM sitting above the metal fuel tank.

A PEM is basically a modern fuel pump relay. New ones are stupid expensive, so I'd take a chance on a used one. They are used in many Volvo models, but my favorite source is P1's (05- S40/V50) as the PEM is inside the car under the carpet by the front corner rear seat on the LHS. Newer P2's may have had them relocated into the rear of the car, wagon's had them in the spare wheel well on the RHS just below the tailgate under the spare wheel cover/tray.

If you are not hearing the fuel pump run when you turn the ignition of for a few seconds, then you either have full fuel pressure or the PEM or fuel pump has died.

This is what a PEM looks like:

I have a bunch of them harvested, and all of them have a FoMoCo part number on them. So chances are they may have been used in cars like the Focus which is related to the P1 Volvos of the mid 2000's onward.
