Rolling in Park, 2004 v70 2.4

Post by Nbraam »

So I just went through the torture of replacing the steering rack on my 2004 v70 2.4 NA. As I'm lightly tightening lugs nuts the wheels is spinning and I know something is off.

When I was removing the rack I fought what I think is the shift cable that runs just underneath where the steering coupler comes through the firewall. Didn't think too much of it, but I imagine I may has knocked something out of alignment with the cable. Car still on Jack stands and shifts between gears fine, just does lock up the front wheels in park.

Car has 240,000 miles on it and was driving and shifting fine. This is from doing the rack.

I held engine from above with Engine holder straddling engine bay and the. lowered subframe with all engine mounts and sway at end links disconnected.

Thoughts? I'm desperate to get this on the road as I need it to get to work.

Thanks in advance for any insights!

Niels

I apologize for the typos, I should have edited. Car shifts fine, but park position does not lock wheels.

Are both wheel raised off the ground? If both front wheels are off the ground then I would expect you to be able to spin either wheel which causes the opposite wheel to spin in the opposite direction. Try jacking up only ONE wheel with the opposite wheel firmly planted on the ground. Are you then able to spin the wheel?

You can have a helper hold one wheel, too.

After much head scratching and taking things apart to find the fault a friend suggested putting it on the ground and giving it a try. Worked like a charm. Park is working fine. Maybe it has to do with having both wheels off the ground?

Just happy to be out from under the car.

Thank you

With both wheel of the ground they can move independently even in park as the guys have said. Perfectly normal.

After a stupid BMW GOMMERCIAL, a good five minute video.

At 2:30 you can see why a car up in the air with transmission in park will let you turn both wheels
