Won't rev past 2k 00 v70r

Post by Volvoob »

Hey everyone. I'm new to volvos but am looking forward to getting into this section of the car world.

I picked up a 2000 v70r with 130k miles on it. The engine had been badly overheated so I replaced it with another engine from a v70r that came with the car and was supposed to be good.

I have replaced the engine, PCV, plugs and coils, fuel pump and filter. Timing is correct and Engine has good compression, I don't remember the numbers but they we all good.

Right now it will not accelerate past 2000 rpm and gets up there very slowly. There are no check engine codes so I have been running blind so far.

I have tried unplugging random coils, and swapping them to see if any cylinders runn differently with no success. Same with the MAF.

Does anyone have any direction on what else I should look at? I am looking forward to driving this car.

Also I have been trying to figure out which dice unit/ dice alternative to use. Can I use the j2534 to connect to my laptop? I haven't seen anything other than an ot might work. All of the recommended ones I have seen in other posts are no longer available.

Any direction is greatly appreciated.

It could be an unhappy software combination of ECM to electronic throttle body. Eventually, that will code and be readable from OBD as a manufacturer specific code, P1xxx

A scanner will give you the right code but probably a gibberish description. My AUTEL reports p1618 as a diesel glow plug failure, for example

Could swapping throttle bodies to the one from the old engine be a possible fix? I will try and see if there is a way to sync the throttle and ECM.

I've plugged it into code readers that we use for other cars and it didn't read any codes and there aren't any lights for it on the dash yet.

Thank you for your help

Test this first. Poor man’s ETM test

Have a helper turn the key to ON , no starting, while you listen under hood.

You should hear about 6-8 seconds of whine followed by a loud click, then no whine.

If you don’t hear that, your throttle body isn’t happy.

Are the engines from the same year of V70R? A 1999 and a 2000 may not have the same ETM. Usually on most P80's an ETM from the same engine version (NA to NA, LPT to LPT, HPT to HPT) should swap. Also the reason the 'new' engine may have been scrapped in the first place was someone not wanting to pay for the repair to a failed ETM.

Thank you for all of the responses. I will try the above test and possibly put on the other throttle body that I have. Then report back here

Both are from a 2000 v70r.

I tried the ETM test above, no whine or click. Swapped the ETM for the other one that I have. No change, failed the test, and still very slow rpm gain from 1500rpm to 2000rpm and won't accelerate past that. ( All in park).

I am going to try and find more of where to go from here, but does anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you for any help

You probably need a new ETM. See the ETM room down below, and BOLO for a late replacement version

I'm sorry for my ignorance, what is the ETM room and what does BOLO mean?

Replacing the ETM I would need to program it with VIDA/DiCE for me car correct?
