Squeaking from dashboard C70

Post by CoupeC70 »

Hi Guys 8)

I have a problem with a squeaking dashboard.
No matter where I touch it, it squeaks.
It comes from the middle, somewhere where the alarm system indicator is

Even while driving. Its like birds chirping
Here is a video link, take a look:

It gets better or disappears completely when the ventilation starts to heat

Most likely badly broken dashboard mounts. I just repaired my buddies 850 dash for the same reason. His was broken in so many places it took a long time to repair. If there were any 850's in the junkyards around here it would have taken less time to go pull a better one.

I also have a V70R and it was also so badly broken I did pull another one which was so much better.

After repair my buddy's only complaint was he could now hear noises from other mechanical issues!!

I should add that my cars dash was so bad it had broken around the glove box mounts and the end mount panels as well.

Thanks Neil,
Could it possibly be something else? Any parts that can squeak without the mounts being broken?
I still have doubts or some hope...
I have now read many posts in forums and no one describes that with a light pressure with the finger can make the dashboard creak/squeak.. hmmm...
But if it really is the mounts, is there a way to make the noise disappear without removing the dashboard?
Maybe a lot of PTFE spray between dashboard and windshield? (Some part must be causing this squeaking noise due to the broken mounts)

When I see the pictures of the mounts, a faulty design in my opinion...

The plastic is also sub-par.

The 98+ dashes are less prone to this problem, but it still happens.

My C70 is from 2001

Has anyone tried using a silicone spray or teflon spray and fired a large amount between the dashboard and the windshield ?

Heat reduces the noise or makes it disappear completely. Then a spray should also be able to help?
In another forum (I think it was swedespeed forum) it helped someone. He used it a lot. But I can't find the post anymore.

At the moment glovebox and the knee panels are removed cuz for other work that I did before
Can I reach any places from there?
I have to say, I already had this squeaking before, 2,3,4 years ago (it sometimes came on cold days).
Never in summer
At some point, even in winter the squeaking has completely disappeared.
Now it's back, and a bit worse...

If you did the video with the glove box removed, it removes a lot of support/stiffening from the dashboard. My dashboard did the same as yours and gradually got worse and it was in terrible shape as I mentioned.

Yes it is a poor design, but it is not fixable from a manufacturing any more so it is what it is.

I have repaired several of them and use metal thin strapping plastic glued and screwed into the dash. I have posted on the subject:
Repair straps

Mount repair
Mount repair

It took a fair amount of time, but in the end I have a non-flexing dash that does not creak.

Abscate I think did a 'repair' with his dash as did others with some kind of tape jammed down between the dash and the windshield to stop the dash rubbing against the glass and squeaking. Sure, silicon spray may well help for a while, but ultimately you have a C70 which is less stiff than the standard cars and the 01-04 are the same as the 98-00 C70 dash boards. Th e850's had knee braces too which helped stiffen the dashes, but it did not stop the issue. This is one of my repairs on the dash

Yes the video is without glovebox and kneepanel

When I move this metal thing holder where the glovebox goes, it squeaks too somewhere in the midle of tha dashboard.

Nice repair, but thats nothing for me ;)

I will try first some teflon spray, maybe I can stop the noise with it

p.s. which part causes the noise when the mounts are broken? the mounts themselves?
