engine or turbo are done, car has 69000 miles.

Post by Rac5443 »

My XC90 has 69000 miles. Driving last week on highway, my car started sputtering, losing power. I got off exit and the vehicle started smoking from under the hood. The car was towed to the nearest Volvo service center, they said the sparks plugs needed to be replaced, and the engine seemed to be running fine. The next day the dealer took car for a ride, the engine started smoking again. They called me and said that oil was coming out of the catalytic converter and the exhaust. They said that the catalytic converter is cracked, and that the engine and/or turbo is finished and I would need to have either of them replaced. They want $2300 to open up the engine, and the new engine cost is $25,000 and the turbo is $8,000. Has anyone ever dealt with anything like this? I am quite dismayed as I never had an issue before. I would appreciate any insight into this.

Sorry no one got back to you on this. I am not familiar with the specifics of the newer engines. However they do seem to have issues with the newer 4 cylinder engines.

At this mileage, if the car has been regularly serviced then a major issue like this should not happen. Naturally this car is out of warranty I assume.

I would suggest talking to the dealer and Volvo USA. This just should not happen at this mileage and they may have a good will program.

Not sure what is involved, but not sure why a turbo would be $8000? The part is maybe $3000? However, if the cat or the muffler system are damaged then the price could easily get up there.

With this type of issue there is no way to easily tell what went wrong without a strip down to identify the cause. Even that may not be definitive.

Good luck.

So I don't think the whole engine is shot. The smoke is likely coming from the bearings on the turbocharger (or the supercharger) leaking oil into the exhaust stream which hosed up the catalytic converter. The turbo could also be leaking externally from a crack in its housing and down onto the exhaust manifold and that's where the under hood smoke might be originating from. It's probably worth (if it's not under warranty) getting it towed to an independent European car specialist and just have them inspect the turbo, probably replace it and the exhaust downpipe with the cat in it. Let us know what's what?
Looking for a V90 to be my next Volvo, at the very least a T5.

Famous garage owner/social media star talking about the SPA cars' supercharger, which I covered here in Houston, We Have an SPA Problem. This is very interesting how they fail.

With the charge from all manufacturer's to reduce the number of parts they carry, and screw us over on hugely over priced parts, there is no incentive to sell replacement parts for these complex units. Even if they moved toward lower priced re-built units that are warranted it would be better than a full priced part. Mind you it it is Centric that were doing the rebuilds, would you buy one?

Don't hold your breath on this!
