1999 S70 GLT - Suggestions on broken lugnuts

Post by Grantkat »

I replaced my front brake pads today and found an issue. Passenger side wheel was missing 2 lugnuts. I had replaced the struts last summer and thought I must not have tightened them and they worked out. However upon inspection I found that they were broken off. The remaining stud is not flush with the rotor but rather broken off about 1/4 inch inside. I sprayed them with blaster and was thinking of using an easy out, but im contemplating other possibilities.

1) use an easy out - My history on success is about 50/50
2) could I remove the hub and rotor as without first removing the rotor? in other words can they come off together - i didnt look when i had it apart.

You should be able to just remove the caliper and rotor. You can then use vice grips to either turn the remaining lug bolt out either forward or backwards from the hub.

I suggest trying some heat, some whacks in the center with a center punch, then a left hand drill bit about 1/4 size in the center of the broken stud.
The combination may loosen and back out the stud without removing the caliper.

i got it taken care of.

I sprayed both with blaster last night and again today. I removed the calliper, bracket and rotor. Unfortunately there was nothing to grab on to, so I went the way of an easy out. When I drilled the first one, the bit caught and ended up screwing the remainign stud out the back, I just had to turn it foward until there was enough to grab in front and screwed it out. The 2nd one I drilled the center hole and used the easy out to unscrew it. Both came out easily.

I have new bolts arriving tomorrow

thanks!
