Seeking advice on blower motor replacement for 2000 v70

Post by geoffmorrow »

Hello All,
I heard the blower motor going (dying) for a couple of days - didn't realize that's what it was - then; no fan at all (though it did seem to sputter back on briefly.) Though a relative car-repair novice, I'd like to give this a shot. I'm assuming ( I know, that's dangerous!) I'll be able to get to it if I can get the panel under the glove-box off, but I can not figure out how to get it off! As far as I can tell, there are no screws to remove this panel. Does anyone know how to get this off?
Also, I'm getting the ECC fault signal of the recirc light flashing. I disconnected the battery with my fingers crossed, but alas, the fault signal didn't go away. Oh yes, we're at 106,000 (just got the timing belt done, hoping not to spend for a while!)
Thanks everyone!
Geoff Morrow

Forget about the blinkies until you replace the blower motor.
That's what it's trying to tell you about.

Remove the glove box door to find the panel's front edge fastners.
There's a corrugated tube looking knoee bolster behind that.
It's got 4 nuts, 2 at either end, that are buried up inside of it.
Then, it's a bit of a wiggle and shift fest to get it out...

NOW you can reach the motor! :D

One note, depending on the production model of your car (early/late), you might have SRS wiring in the bundle looped around the evaporator case (the wiring you'll have to move to remove the blower). Check for bright orange insulation...if you see in the wire bundle a small bundle with bright orange insulation, do the following:

1) Disconnect negative battery terminal from battery
2) Perform work
3) Place ignition key in II position
4) Reconnect negative battery terminal to battery
5) Do not enter vehicle until SRS light has extinguished (or stays on for more than 1 minute, indicating a stored fault code)

Be safe and have fun!

Don't forget to replace the blower resistor at the same time, either one goes bad and either one could BE bad.
The lights may go away after replacing both anyway (after clearing them)

I have a spare blower motor and resistor for '98-'00 FWD Volvo's.
You can PM me or email me for details of part numbers if you wish. These were pulled from a wrecked '99 S70 and should work in your car. I was saving them for when mine went (they all tend to go once during the life of the car) but am willing to part with them.
