Windshield wiper delay not working

Post by ljsommar1 »

Car is a 2002 V70 249k miles, We have owned since 68k. Rotating the knob to adjust the wiper delay seems to make no difference although at times the delay does appear to be different. I think this always been the case since we owned the car but I only started driving it recently.
Have no idea where to start. Hardware or software? Anyone else have this problem?

I would buy a new stock. Most likely the connector inside worn from "adjusting". Same as turn signal stock is getting worn around 170k and you can either replace with new and forget or heroically try to clean connectors and adjust. Total "parts cannon" suggestion but unless you want to remove the stock and connect ohm meter to the proper connectors(either pay for all data or look somewhere in vida for hours)and good luck finding proper values...

What is the process for removal/disassembly? I have had a lot of success with repairing electronic components. So having a go at repairing sounds appealing.
Thanks for the response.

I replaced the ignition lock assembly some years ago, I'm assuming it should just be removing the covers to get access, then a connector and a few screws. Any tricks?
By the way a competent parts guy at the dealership also thought it would be the stalk.

try bi-directional actuation in vida.
if it works ok in vida that indicates its the stalk.

Remove the three T25 screws from the bottom of the steering column cover. Pull off the top and bottom covers - this is tricky because of the ignition cylinder face and tilt steering wheel lever. There are two silver phillips screws at the base of the right stalk. Remove these screws and then carefully pull on the stalk perpendicular to the column. There is an electrical connector on the bottom of the stalk that automatically connects and disconnects when you pull the stalk off.

Disassembly of the stalk to get to the internal contacts is really tricky because of several hidden snaps. I gave up and got a replacement part at the junkyard because I couldn't get the snaps to unhook.

Purchased wiper unit from Erie scrapyard and installed this afternoon. It resolved the issue, 15 minute job.
Thanks for everyone's help. It will be nice to have wiper delay again.
Really love this site. It has saved me untold dollars.
