I'm dropping the transmission on my 2007 P2 XC70 D5 with the TF-80SC transmission next week to replace the converter, internal filter and valve body.
Anything else i should replace while i'm at it? O-rings or sealings after splitting the transmission? Do i have to remove and possibly damage the sleeve on the transfer case? And whats the proscedure for filling fluid before startup? Probably can't get the fluid out of the cooler to get all the fluid replaced?

Of course, anything that you can, since you will be in there, you should replace. I am curious what were your symptoms? But yeah, new TC and new valve body + new filter will help, but if there is any wear in the internal clutches, that is your first priority.

Transmission slipping is the main symptom with whining sound from the transmission oil pump. Reading post online suggests bad converter and clogged filter. Its slipping so bad the car wont move before motor and transmission oil is warmed up.

Well the thing is, that filter gets clogged not just from debris from a worn out TC, but also clutches. So even if you replace the filter, vb and tc, if the clutches are worn out, it's not going to be that much better.

From what i've read the converter is the main problem on the TF-80SC transmission from the late P2 chassis. Surely replacing the clutches would be optimal, but seeing others splitting the transmission case and having clutches with minimal wear after 200-300k miles i don't want to buy expensive transmission parts if its not necessarily.

Of course. I am personally talking only from my experience with Aw55 and I am only extrapolating based on that experience. For instance I am on my second transmission and while most do not have it, my second transmission has a whine on specific engine RPM, so some bearing or as vtl mentioned, some races.

Dropping transmission on an 18 years old car is a good occasion for the real main seal replacement.
Collar sleeve - inspect splines for damage. If damaged - replace. Damage eats up splines in angle gear as well, so you better replace sacrificial collar sleeve before that happens. Old or new sleeve, have the splines clean and use PTFE grease, either Volvo or Krytox GPL 206. 0.5 oz is enough for one application.
Drain all ATF before removing the transmission. Prefill new torque converter as much as you can. It takes quite a bit of ATF, but filling it up may be difficult. Anything you can get in before installing it into the transmission would help. When transmission is mounted back, fill it up at or above hot mark. Probably need to give it a time to drain into the sump before checking level. Start the engine, listen for pump noises. Stop if any and correct the fluid level. Heat ATF to about 100 F and check the fluid level on running engine - should be around cold mark. Correct level, heat it further to 180 and check/correct level at hot mark. Done.

Thanks! Allready ordered the rear main seal so it will be replaced. Will probably order and replace the collar sleeve to, not fun having to wait an extra week for some small parts that needs replacing. PTFE-grease is a great tip! Really appreciate exact product numbers!vtl wrote: ↑20 Apr 2025, 17:44 Dropping transmission on an 18 years old car is a good occasion for the real main seal replacement.

There is no dip stick on the TF-80SC transmission, but the procedure is probably the same with the level pipe on the drain plug. Guessing there will be old oil in the cooler so i ordered 10L of Ravenol T-IV 3309 transmission fluid so i have extra to drain through the coolant pipe.
