'99 S70 - ETM Replacement Troubleshooting

Post by Mccjim12 »

I have an ETS light on in my '99 S70 NA. Multiple codes (P1017, 1018, 1019, 1043...all seem to point to ETM). I am not really mechanically inclined but have learned a fair amount about these cars in the 6 years I have owned it.

I was taking a look at my ETM and initially thought it was an original white label ETM. The car has 185,000 miles which is a lot for one of those units it seemed to me. But figured it was possible. Car has never really accelerated the way it probably ought to which I attributed to the ETM being original. But never had an ETS light until now.

In doing some research I have found out that there were some refurbished ETMs with white labels that followed the yellow label units. From what I can tell the date of manufacture on mine is 2013. The part number 36050563 seems to be a newer part number that superceded the part number 9186793. With this knowledge it seems that the ETM was replaced rather recently in the car's history. The car had 108k on it in 2010 I know from service records and had 135k when I purchased it in 2019. So not a ton of miles on this ETM.

Is it really possible that this replacement ETM has already failed? I have all the symptoms (surging idle, stumbling, the aforementioned codes. But not being an expert I don't want to spend the $600 on a XemodeX unit and not have that fix the problem. Any other problems jump out that may cause these symptoms?

A sideline to this is that XemodeX is out of stock of ETMs for the past month or so.

Thought about trying to source an eBay unit of the same vintage but worried about software conflicts. Don't know if this car had an upgrade somewhere along the line. The part numbers have cause me a lot of confusion when trying to source a used one. Any insight on compatible numbers would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much!

Jim

A lot more detail down in the ETM Room Forum

That’s the latest version , non contact ETM. They can still go bad.

Try to find the same part number on ebay taken from an NA car and it should be good to go

One other question: would finding a part number 8644346 circa 2001 (obviously not the best option due to age and functionality) be possible to plug and play? Or would there be a software issue due to the age? Thanks!

I have a 2000 S70 SE Base NA. The ETM is easy to access and clean so would try that first. Use a lint free towel and clean the butterfly carefully front and back as much as possible not to stress the pivot points. Spray and saturate the clothe rather than direct spraying of the ETM and be careful not to introduce too much cleaner into the butterfly pivot points. The pivot area is tight so it's more difficult to clean. You may get some smoke and stumbling at start up after cleaning which will be normal.
.
Blessings,

Almost certainly software issue as there were multiple software changes in the 20xx years

Abscate, can you clarify what you mean by this? I have not had any issues swapping an ETM from the same model of 99-00 P80 no matter the year the ETM was made?

Thanks much. I did purchase a XemodeX ETM from a eBay seller that had the same ‘99 NA S70. The ETM was just made in November 2024. Thought I might get lucky and have it work but no dice. Throws all the same fault codes (P1017-1020 and 1043) ..faulty signal accelerator pedal, no input and so on.

Question I have is could a software conflict alone produce this result where there is no difference from my old ETM?

I am thinking of ordering a new one from XemodeX but am worried that will not help and maybe there is another issue? Is there anything else that could cause the ETS light and all these codes? Stupid question but I am just so lost on this. Don’t want to order a new one and be stuck for the $$$.

Thanks again!

Faulty accelerator pedal? Have you tested to verify both pots in it are reading successfully? If that's fricked it won't matter what ETM you put on.
Wisdom requires knowledge as a prerequisite, but knowledge can be developed due to a lack of wisdom.
In order to learn how to fix something, you must first learn how to break it.

Thanks for the reply. Sorry, I probably worded my post poorly. The codes I have, along with ETS light (NO CEL) are as follows:

P1017 - ECM
P1019 - no comm between throttle and ETM. Also saw Valvetronic Eccentric Shaft Sensor Power Supply...not sure what that means.
P1020 - throttle body communication
P1043 - accelerator pedal sensor fault

As to your question, I am not sure how to check the accel pedal.

Just puzzling to me that it would throw ETS light and related codes if that was not the cause.
