Here in Texas I end up replacing batteries every 3 years. It wasn't always this bad. Makes me wonder if there has been a change in the way batteries are constructed over the last 30 years.
There is a lot of mediocre quality lead in the supply stream for batteries, but in hot climates I don’t think buying oem will get you much. Abby’s 99 is running a 2018 up here in cool climates.

I find batteries are for the most part lasting well. The proviso is not having them run too low, and where possible (and it is) to check the battery fluid level and keep it topped up. Many new batteries no longer have the facility to do this unfortunately. I changed the 10 year old battery in our son's 2006 XC70 (well we think it was that old as no date code and fitted when bought), not because it was bad, but as it was 10 years old. In winters here the deep cold when parked outdoors can kill a battery that was otherwise showing no issues.

I believe heat can kill batteries. Looking at the overheated one on the C30 project is a good case in point. Maintaining your charging system and checking grounds so the alternator charges correctly is also a good maintenance for longer battery life as well as watching your battery leads are good.

Just looked at the replacement battery from Volvo for the C30. I was near $500 CDN!! That is total nonsense.

I can get a battery from Costco with better warranty for $200.

Good luck out there!

There are only a handful - three or four - major battery builders in the States these days. Clarios (ne Johnson Controls) is the biggest player,
East Penn/Deka and Exide. Like the restaurant trades ordering pies ala carte from Sysco calling out the type of flour and specifying lard in the crust &c., retailers like Interstate and NAPA can fiddle with the internal bits of car batteries to fit their price point and warranty models.
Sometimes the only play is to buy something affordable from a local vendor and hope for the best.

Yep, which is why I stick with Walmart for my batteries. Auto parts stores charge an insane premium. Same with oil.

You guys jinxed me because I just had to change the battery on the XC. It went from taking slightly longer to start to one day just being totally dead in about a week or two. Thankfully it was somewhere I could get a jump, and drove straight to Walmart and bought the top step battery before they became AGM. Still couldn't get the hold-down to seat properly.

When I was walking around the car letting it run, I noticed I could hear the fuel pump for the first time I can remember. At least I think it is, hard to isolate under the car. It is approaching 200k miles but now I feel stupid for ever letting the tank get low. Hopefully it's something else, as the information on the AWD pumps is pretty convoluted not even accounting for doing the job.

The hold down on my 850 works fine, but on my S70 it would not. The 850 has an H5 (DIN) battery, and I think the S70 had an BCI/SAE? group-size battery.

These cars are supposed to use either H5 or H6 batteries.

Mine says it's a group xx battery, but the part number is h6. Walmart didn't have any batteries marked as only h6 on the shelves.

Possibly a H5 = Group 47 battery. A H6, the other version is a Group 48. Both should fit and lock in on a P80.
