Hi All - curious I have a tad over 100K Miles on my V70. I have to replace the alternator, so was thinking about replacing the PCV box while I was in there. Car had no codes or reason to change it, just was thinking maybe as part of preventative maintenance. I honestly don’t want to, this is the third alternator I have had to replace, so kinda just want to get it back together but labor wise, if it makes sense….
Doing a little research on YouTube, I see they can be problematic…. Although this is my second V70 and I have never had an issue.
Thank you in advance, Tim

Do the glove test.
At a minimum, do the banjo bolt. My PCV when I serviced it was actually in good shape. All vacuum hoses in that area- that's a different story..

Thank you, I was thinking that too. Is the banjo bolt hard to get to ?

With the alternator removed it’s a breeze. There is an extensive thread on the forum regarding the 2014 updates to this bolt. The old design has the potential to total your engine.

Hey- why does your alternator keep failing? What brand is stamped on the voltage regulator?
Anything other than OEM or quality rebuilders fail. I replaced 3 on my XC70 before I finally fired the rebuilder for using cheap parts.

I am a little baffled on the alternator. My original one failed in May of 2024. I had it replaced by a local mechanic and (for me) the cost was excessive. So last week I got the power system failure light. Put a volt meter on and was only getting 11.5V while running. The battery was also fairly new and had an about 12.5 volts so I just assumed it was the alternator. Called the mechanic and he said it was a one year warranty so even though it was 3 weeks past, wanted full price for a new one, and because he could not get the brand he used before, he could only get the Bosch, it was going to be $200 more. So I figured I would tackle it myself.
I got a replacement from O’Reilly. I put it in and still had the Power System failure light. Drove it over, and they said they tested, said battery good, but regulator bad. At the same time, I had them test the old one and it tested fine, which I found strange. The new one however is putting out 13.5 volts, so I know it is at least charging the battery.
So I had two ideas. Of course O’Reilly said no problem on replacing the alternator. I actually was not aware of the different regulators until reading more threads, so now I know. I was also thinking of taking the old regulator and trying it on the new alternator. Haven’t really decided yet. I found the most difficult part of replacing the alternator was getting the old one out between the engine and the radiator and getting the new one in. So I am kinda dreading that part.
I am in south west Florida and the temps are already “feels like” +100 degrees and the joy of self repairs fades fast….. lol. Plus. I have a 71 Olds I need to do a complete front end on.
