Alternator + DIM coincidence? 2007 V70

Post by Georgeandkira »

I installed a rebuilt alternator from a trusted rebuilder.
They didn't know about the regulators 2004 (?) revision.
There's something called the LIN network which I never heard of before.
The rebuilt alternator with the outdated regulator caused a "charging system service urgent" message even though it was charging.
I've driven a bit with the warning light

Then the numerals on my DIM randomly flash and the gauge needles don't work.
My question is: Did I fry my DIM?

I'm trying to gather info before sending the DIM off to XeMODeX for a costly repair.

Have you replaced the voltage regulator with the correct one?

Late P2 electronics is mostly top-notch in terms of under/over voltage protection.

I doubt anyone will be able to answer that question with definity. It is possible that improper alternator was overcharging and thus fried the DIM. It is also possible that DIM decided to break since it is the part that has "reputation ". I would concentrate on obtaining proper alternator first(we discussed this topic recently with most members suggesting- buy used from erie vovo and either install like it is, install after reputable shop will go through it and clean/test/replace bearings etc. Can possibly buy some from fcp but they are rebuilt units as well) so you will not risk frying other modules which will become even more expensive. Ideally you would find proper electrical diagram to DIM and check connectors, check power and grounds, check can/bus network signal with scope...at this moment it is easier to pay xemodex for testing(btw look at prior posts I though there were alternative options for repair in USA for cheaper) and if found to be broken-pay for repairs or cloning.
