Dipstick pops out

Post by imaV70Rdriver »

2004 V70R, 185,000 miles, M66

I have an issue. The dipstick has started to pop out occasionally, usually after a long drive in hot weather. I did the glove test and the glove didn’t inflate or get sucked in, it just fluttered. I had a good look at the dipstick and the O-rings are hard and flat, and I think that’s where I should start. Anyone have suggestions about getting a new dipstick vs new O-rings on the old dipstick? Should I stick with Genuine Volvo, or has anyone tried aftermarket parts? Thanks.

Then that means you have a fault in the PCV system somewhere. Fix it fast or the next thing popping out will be a main seal.

Keep your oem deepstick. Replace oil ring(s). Oe. Quality would be best.

@ Vova585.

Thanks, I’ll get them from my local dealer this week.

If it doesn’t suck in, you failed the glove test. I’d leave the dipstick out a bit (or cut a piece of the oil cap gasket out ) to allow any pressure to escape should the car need to be driven before the PCV system is redone. It could save your cam and crank seals.

It failed, you just didn't test it fully :) Turbo engines have not one, but two PCV contours. One works when there's a vacuum in intake manifold, another works under boost. You didn't check it under boost. Have a buddy/wife/son filming the glove while you stomp on the brakes, put transmission in D and gently rise RPMs to ~2500 for a couple of seconds. ECM will command boost and your glove will inflate.

Common parts to check/replace is that long expensive hose: https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.ph ... &jsn=11002

Banjo bolt (it has a valve inside, which gums up over time): https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... vo-8653884

PTC valve: https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... vo-8653644

Deformed PTC grommet: https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... vo-3507985

Or a hole in the intake hose: https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... o-30680446

In case you find PTC grommet bad, I'd suggest to replace the whole hose. It's extremely tight fit, you may mangle or even break the hose while attempting to replace that darn grommet. Ask me how I know.

If you checked/replaced PCV and the engine still shows signs of excessive crankcase pressure, you have too much blow-by gases then. Worn out piston rings and bore taper are the causes of blow-by.

@vtl

It’s a manual (M66). Are you able to instruct me on how to do the glove test under boost?

Does it have a neutral switch? Maybe try it in the first gear, with clutch depressed?

I don’t know what you mean by “neutral switch”. The only neutral I know of is in between gears. I’ll try the glove test again later today in first gear with the clutch depressed.

Thanks for the parts info. I’ve watched a few videos too, it’s always good to get a visual of what I’m in for.
