The first cylinder to fire on startup is pseudo-randomly distributed between 1-5.

How does that work? I understand the terminology. But I'm a little lost. Is there joke going over my head? Lol

Think of it in terms of an old distributor type of ignition system. The rotor is spinning around, firing in order, and you turn off the key. It just stops wherever it happens to be in its rotation. When you go and start it again, it picks up where it was when you shut it off. It doesn't somehow spin over to number 1 and then start firing up again.

I had a mobile mechanic friend of mine look it over a few times since ive had it and try all the 5 or 6 different scanners he had but no avail other than the same generic ones I got. He recommended doing the cam and crank sensors. Im just hesitant with sensor replacement after the several I replaced chasing my abs module issues. It can't hurt. But again money spent guessing somewhat. What would you do? I'm off tomorrow so I'll have so time to mess about. Besides the coil experiment any thoughts?

These idle symptoms sound like both of my 2000 V70 NAs. When I did both PCV jobs, something happened to the intake manifold gasket and it crimped, allowing an intake air leak. It caused difficulty starting, rough idle, cylinder 1 misfire, yet would drive rather well with the expected MPG. Took about 4 months after the job to start appearing and a year to progress to massive failure. I know you said no air leak (both of mine were confirmed air leak), but maybe they simply didn't find it. I clearly don't know how to place an intake manifold without messing up the gasket, or the clean/paint that the machine shop did messed it up, but that's for another thread.

One of mine may also have leaking fuel injector gaskets. I can hear chirping at idle and I assume it's them. I'll be replacing them when I'm in there next.

Started over in my thinking and ditched my ngk plugs I put in at the beginning and went to oem bosch platinum ones. But now my idle is fluctuating like badly wanting to stall. One of the plugs bad maybe?

While your at it, disconnect your battery for 1/2 an hour (15 min would probably be fine, but who's in a hurry) to reset the ECU.
Then see how it runs and what codes come back after a few start/stop cycles.

I went and redid the job. It seems like whatever coating that came on the spark plugs just messed them up. Took them all out and cleaned the crap off and what I could in get to in the motor. Put them all back and it was fine again. No codes still atm.

So P0301 and 302 have come back separately at different times in the last few months. I again went and redid my spark plug job ensuring everything was to spec and cleaned throughly. I'm just kinda lost. The car has 0 symptoms when it's at temperature or even slightly warm. But the first start of the day or after a long day at work it just starts like shit. It starts everytime. Never stalls or dies or feels low on power or codes coming up while driving. If it does throw a code it's in the first 60 seconds of moving or immediately after starting. I'm just starting to think it's gotta be something dumb. Like a fuel filter or purge/air pump valve. If it was bad plugs or injectors or even coils I just can't imagine it would drive like a dream but it does. That is if it's at temp. Banging my head against the wall on this one. No other codes are ever given. Almost always it's just p0301 or p0300
