Gas station adventures with my 06 xc70. First notices it would shut off not quite filling all the way up but now it's having issues just getting a gallon in without shutting off. Anything other than replacing the charcoal cannister I can try ? It looks like most likely out of my range since the subframe needs to come down. Can I disconnect the large connector at the cannister and blow shop air through ? I shot some carb cleaner down the vent tube from the fill tube and also shit some air through but no difference.
Any guidance would be appreciated.

blast compressed in the filler as you cover the tank fill inlet with a rag to seal the air, if theres junk in the vent it should blow it clear.
if you need to access the vent hose pull the wheel, you might have to remove the liner, use jackstands.
Theres no need to drop subframes.

I guess that is worth a try, but not heard of that issue , but every day is a new day. I'm not sure on the P2 if the venting system is like on the P80's where the vent pipe runs through the roll-over valve. If it does, it could be that has failed and is shut, but then I'd expect an engine code to possibly be thrown for an emissions error. Although as the system only checks when the valve is closed, if it is stuck closed it may not through a code.

Get under the rear bumper at passenger side and look up, you'll see a hose with filter at the end. In my case there was a spider who built a nest in the filter's opening. Vacuumed it, problem gone.

The P2 Volvos have the EPA mandated fuel system leak detection and Onboard Refuelling Vapor Recovery (ORVR). P80 vehicles didn't have either of these systems. The company I used to work for supplied the vapor vent valves for the stainless steel Volvo fuel tank version that was used to pass the California Air Resources Board (CARB) standards for Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (PZEV). Plastic fuel tanks received vent valves from a competitor to the company I worked for.
Mazda had a recall for a certain spider species building a web inside their canister vent hose and causing refuelling problems - just like VTL described. The large filter that Volvo used for the system vent to prevent dirt, bugs, and other contaminants from getting into the fuel system is supposed to prevent these blockages.
Look for kinks in the vent hoses. Look for debris inside the filler pipe blocking the fuel flow if you have access to a bohr scope. I have seen several warranty claims because children put things down the filler pipe when imitating their parents filling the car with gas. The check valve at the end of the fuel pipe gets blocked when the item wedges. Look at the rubber jumper between filler pipe and tank de-laminating on the inside and slowing down the flow into the fuel tank.
I don't know if the 2006 XC70 had a canister vent solenoid or one of the pumps for pressurising the fuel system. The solenoid and pump are used in conjunction with a pressure transducer to detect leaks. The tank is either pressurised with a pump or vacuumed using the manifold vacuum and then the solenoid is closed. If the pressure or vacuum dissipates then there is a leak in the fuel system. The solenoid can get stuck closed which will prevent fast refuelling or the pump can break in a closed position.
I looked in VIDA for 2006 XC70 fuel system repairs and saw that Volvo calls it a Leak Diagnostic Pump and the picture looks like this: The solenoid looks like this (Volvo call it a Shut-off valve in the parts catalog):
The Volvo parts catalog also says the solenoid was used up to chassis number 47,999 and the pump was used on chassis number 48000 and after.
The J-hose on both of my 2001 V70s failed and caused fuel system leaks - making refuelling easier but setting a check engine error code. If this hose were to get crushed or flake on the inside it would cause refuelling problems.
The worst case cause for refuelling problems is if the large vent valve inside the fuel tank gets contamination or damage preventing it from opening all the way. If it doesn't open fully, you will fill for a few seconds, get a nozzle shutoff, and then the pressure inside the tank will prevent additional refuelling.
Filing the tank very slowly, at 2 to 3 gallons per minute, will get you past many of the blockage problems but it will take much more time to refuel. Please confirm if you have a plastic tank or a stainless steel fuel tank.

'04 V70, mine will take about $1.50 worth of fuel then nozzle shuts off. 1-2 minutes later, that gas will burp back out the filler. Then it will take fuel normally. This happens about every 4th fuel fill.
