Get enough water in the bilge and it can happen anywhere.
Misery installed during previous ownership; that was the as-delivered condition.
Once my blood pressure gets out of four digits I may start a data log. Might be a keeper.

Was that underwater or is that just mildew from being stored in the damp?

^ Nicely done ! And that is some good compression.

Forgot to quoteChieber wrote: ↑07 Jul 2025, 15:36 Today I some time left, which gave me the opportunity to fix some more things.
Replaced the passenger side damper motor for a used one. I’m going to keep the old one and try and fix it when I have more time.
Furthermore, I’ve checked the compression. Seems to be quite ok for an engine with 450k km’s.
To be honest, I should’ve checked this when I just got the car. But the car was running smooth, but still losing coolant after swapping out the faulty heater core.
So I kept postponing the compression test, in case it was real bad news.
I still have to do a leak down test, alas, that’s for another time.
Also, at the pick’n pull where I got the damper motor, I miraculously found ONE used remote among a mountain of keys.
It got a new battery and I retrieved the vgla pin to add the ‘new’ remote to the car.
When it was confirmed that it worked, I cleaned up the sticky shell. The pnp stuck a label around the remote.

Had to replace my new junkyard found blinker. I was too careless and used too much force whilst pushing the housing back in, which resulted in me breaking the two inner tabs.
Also replaced the dead light bulbs in the headlight switch. Did not know there were two lights! One bulb for the parking lights and one for the head lights.

I've been sanding and grinding so long, that even my mama thinks my mind is gone.

Now it's almost ready for paint, epoxy base coat to start with.
This was much harder than welding, and I got frustrated and started all over twice. In the end I developed some new techniques and skills and learned some new things.
-Wood rasps they work great for rough shaping the results, particularly when using fiberglass filler. I have a bunch of quality rasps for wood work, it worked fine to blow them out with compressed air. Also used a regular file later on, a file card gets that clean.
-The secret to a good filler finish is called polyester resin, mix some into the final coat of polyester filler. Polyester filler is basically that + solids like talc powder. Got a much more easily worked and flowing product then. This can also be used to revitalize old filler that's gone hard in the can.
Also made some of my own tools
A flat 4" wide flat sanding block, wasn't of use for the fender but pretty sure it will be useful if I gotta do doors, roof, or the rear hatch (it also needs a refinish, maybe new metal). Sandpaper is glued on. Using orphan belts for machines I no longer have.

Flexible variant

Oh yeah I removed the bumper and found the left fender is almost as bad!

I didn't get anything done except figure out I have more work to do and my rear drivers wheel brakes are still dragging. Tried a caliper off the project car, new pads and rotors, swapped between brackets, used silicone grease, new brake soft line just in case the three year old ATE line somehow got kinked or damaged internally, brakes bled. It's gotten better, much better that I thought I had fixed it until I had parked after a significant amount of downhill and noticed the rear drivers wheel was painful to grab whereas I could keep my hand on the other three wheels.
If my windows are down and I'm driving up against a wall or parked cars, I can hear a constant sound in between rubbing and grinding, it goes away when I'm at a stop. And sitting parked I noticed the brakes squeaking when I got out of the car and it shifted forwards.
Potentially a warped new rotor from driving with the project car caliper that was also sticking or whatever the issue was before rebuilt caliper+new hose? First thing I did was try pads and rotors so potentially damaged them by driving before the rebuilt caliper? Malformed and restricted short hard lines I've had to make twice now for the 5" run on the AWD from the Y junction mounted to the drivers side jack point? (I twisted the line trying to get the soft hoses off 3 years ago and then did the same thing again with the recent work). I think a master cylinder or brake booster issue would affect both rear wheels unless the drivers side sees the issue more with being a shorter run. The brake pedal does have a slight "whoosh" sound when pressed that I've only noticed on this car and it's always had inferior brakes even right since the first time I replaced them compared to other cars but I always chalked that up to being an AWD and maybe the low-dust low-noise ceramic pads.

That little 5 inch piece of brake line is a joy to make , isn’t it?

And you are sure the parking brake cable is not binding?
