2001 S60 T5 How to remove fuel from tank.

Post by FarmallM51 »

I replaced the fuel pump assembly on this car, however when refilled with fuel, the new o-ring on the driver-side is leaking. I've tried tightening the ring, but it is still seeping. What's the best way for me to remove some fuel so I can remove the tightening ring & sending unit to see where the problem lies? Can it be siphoned? Can I release the filter connection and let it drain? Put a large container under the tank and open the ring? Another option? Thanks for the help.

I like the idea about disconnecting the line at fuel filter. Hopefully it will allow for sufficient drain of the tank. Or you can disconnect the line after the fuel filter put proper size hose over and "bridge" fuel pump relay which will make the process faster.

Yes it can be siphoned. I have used a rotary crank pump with about 1/4 inch OD stiff, clear plastic line into the tank. The pump I used could siphon without cranking after getting it started. The clear tube is needed to see if you are lifting the fuel to the pump. Getting flow started can be fiddlly.
The small tube is needed to get past the antisiphon valve. The tube may have to be twisted to get down to the fuel level. A small tube will siphon very slowly, but it will work.

I considered that, but I didn't want to drive from Keokuk to Des Moines with the rear seat out & cover off the sending unit while it's leaking. :D

I got to ask, do you own a Farmall M tractor?
See my tractor ownership list below.

After sitting for 24 hours with a full tank of fuel, the seepage around the o-ring seems to have stopped. I don't know what caused it to finally seal, but I'll keep an eye on it for a few days.

Do yourself a favor and fix it right. Fuel leaks are not self sealing. Give it proper condition-hot/cold, full tank-and it will be back. I would buy new O-ring and plastic "cap screw ring" and replace everything to assure worry free driving.

I tend to agree. It's sealed up enough that I'm comfortable driving it for a few days to get the fuel level down. I'll order a new o-ring and the screw ring is a good idea also. Thanks.
