Potential CEM fault - 08 XC90 3.2 R Design

Post by scot850 »

There is a guy selling this car above due to an electrical problem. I don't know more than that yet but it is cheap (to buy!  ) and while pulling a CEM is a PITA on P2 cars, what are the issues that happens with CEM's and what causes them to fail?

I am waiting for the owner to respond hopefully. He appears to know or believe it is the CEM but says the car still starts and drives. No mention of specifics. I will add to this in advance.

The car is cheap enough that even if the CEM needs replaced, sending it to Xemodex for a cloned unit would still make this potentially a cheap car.

Any input is appreciated!

Walked or rather ran away from this. Seller bought the car this way having been diagnosed by a 'dealer' as having a bad CEM. No information as to what the issue(s) were to make that diagnosis. Car also had 160k miles on it.

My assumption is the seller bought it to try to fix. They either do not have the skills, or they found more issues and are selling it on. They had gone as far a checking out Xemodex for a cloned or repaired unit. They claimed the car ran which is possible with a bad CEM, but I have the view, there is cheap and ones to walk away from. If he had been the owner when the issue happened, then maybe I would have looked into it more. With a 17 year old car, it is more than likely there are more issues that the owner is or is not aware of.

The old saying, " There is no such thing as a cheap old Volvo!"

Thankfully it has sold.
