Hello fellow Volvo people. I keep getting a P0014 code on my 2004 XC70. It usually is thrown at first start up in the morning and causes multiple dropped cyl. After clearing the codes, the car runs fine and will restart fine after the car is warmed up. Any ideas? TIA.

It is a 'cam reset valve' (VOlvo term) or cam solenoid error on the exhaust cam.

- Incorrect cam belt timing
- dirty Cam reset valve (VVT solenoid)
- dirty oil or poor oil performance
- Bad VVT hub

Inspect the VVT solenoids, especially the exhaust one. You need a new gasket for each: https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... z-30731212 It is not uncommon for mesh filter in this gasket to clog.

Absolutely don't over-tighten the bolts! They don't take much to torque, like 10 Nm. You may lift up the surface around threads and then you'll have an oil leak.

thats my oil change code, occasionally I toss a filter in too. Code goes away after that.

Ok...so I removed, cleaned and re-gasketed the exhaust VVT solenoid. Doesn't seems to have made a difference. My question is, Should I also do the intake side VVT solenoid? The exhaust did seem sticky before I cleaned it. It only throws the code on start up.

The valves can also go bad. With the ridiculous cost of new ones, Look for a used one or junkyard that may have one to swap in.

Check the resistance across the pins. should be pretty low. I can't recall the range but 4-6 ohms or less?

OP says they were sticky, most likely teflon liner deteriorated and gummed up. Goes to trash bin.

I think it’s 27 ohms spec. Testing resistance is a necessary but not sufficient test for good function
