Rear LSD gear oil - 1997 Volvo 850 AWD

Post by scot850 »

Hi guys,

Trying to help my mechanic buddy find the correct gear oil for his 97 850 AWD manual rear diff. I know they were not available in the US, so hoping some of our European MVS'rs might be able to help.

He is positive the car is fitted with an LSD rear differential, but I cannot find any reference to that as an option. He has to replace the rear axle seals so will need the correct oil to re-fill. I know LSD diffs need a specific gear oil, I don't think 75/90 or 80/90 oil will work.

As usual, any help would be appreciated!

Neil.

Right from Mother..1161619

Note the special part number for the angle gear ,too. It has little bots in it that make the power turn the corner

Thanks for the info. Problem is, assuming the 97 850 AWD does have an LSD (I can find no reference to Volvo listing it), there is no listing for the diff on that for oil. It does list an LSD oil for 2/7/900 RWD cars though.

What a pain.

Even for P80/P2 AWD cars the angle gear and rear diff oils are listed as NLA. I did buy some oil from Volvo with a new part number and was told it is the same for both. Hard to believe when the oils have different specs? Strange thing is that the oil they sold me was part number :
31259380 which is listed as NLA?

The old part numbers were - Angle gear - 31292380 and Rear diff - 1161620

I can't see how these are the same oil when I think the rear diff is a 75/90 weight oil and the angle gear is an API GL5 spec oil. In the list Abscate listed above, the angle gear part number is listed as : 1161648, which does cross reference to the new number.

In the attached link, I have found that the rear diff part number has been superseded to this same as the angle gear?:

https://www.volvocarstorontoparts.ca/p/ ... 61620.html

That seems weird.

The angle gear takes the same GL5 oil but with a low foaming additive , BOT (thats my bots joke above).

NLA? I might have some in my stash.

Yes the angle gear oil is still available, but they appear to have merged several part numbers into the one now listed 31292380.

The info I don't know is the 97 has a different rear diff to the 98- P80's, and it has no descriptions as to if it is an LSD or not. It does list the same oil though as the later cars on what I can find.

Problem with old cars is sometimes just finding the correct information! The 2/7/900 diff has an API GL5 diff oil with a LSD modifier in it. It lists another different part number: 1161619

Ah the joys............

97 850 AWD is the same as x70 '98 AWD. Technically it's not an LSD, it's an auto locker. Operates off difference in wheel speed and isn't clutch based

That was what I thought, but the part numbers are different for the 97 and 98 diffs'. It is my buddy who is the former Volvo mechanic's car that he has owned for 10+ years so I assume he knew what he owns and has. The reason I doubt what he says is the explanation you give, and the fact I can find no reference to a limited slip differential.

What makes me question what you say is if you look at the diff break down picture it definitely has clutch packs in it:

https://www.volvocarstorontoparts.ca/a/ ... 70771.html

but then the 98 does not give a part number on this drawing but it too shows the same:

https://www.volvocarstorontoparts.ca/a/ ... 72204.html

I'll defer to your knowledge as I have no idea on complex diffs like these. Thanks for the info. Much appreciated.

That reminds me of the GM/Eaton G80 Gov-Lock/Gov-bomb (The smaller versions tend to explode easily)

https://www.autoevolution.com/news/a-si ... 94874.html#

If the Volvo rear differential does indeed work the same way, it probably won't need anything special, or an additive. GM has a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) on NOT using any additives as it will hinder the correct operation of the locker. The clutches are used in the triggering of the engagement, not the actual locking of the two axle shafts.
