I would first try the thicker oil and see what happens. I have a friend with a V50 T5 AWD, and he is now running 5w40 in his car to slow down the rate of oil loss with the high mileage he now has on the car (coming up on 200k miles).
It is worth a try before condemning the car and walking way.
Good Luck!

hi.
I read something about valve seals in this post... been working on my 850 that recently died (cranks but does not start)... long story short, fuel pressure regulator has broken diaphram, lots of fuel got sucked up by the vacuum into the engine oil... after replacing the oil, lots of white smoke coming out of the exhaust (very thick smoke in the first 30 mins. then died down but still very visible white smoke) ...but the next day they were gone. saw this scenario happen twice... I noticed this happens every time I changed the oil. Actually, before I caught the bad fuel pressure regulator, I changed the oil, when it ran I saw that thick smoke then gone the next day scenario... so I figured there's fuel mixed in the oil again so changed the oil again, that's the second time I saw it.
Where else could oil pass to get into the combustion chamber? Would a bad PCV cause this?
Thank you so much for this site (and to Robert DIY)!! I've learned a lot to keep my 850 running...

Leaking injectors will cause gas to run down into the oil through the piston rings. This will also wash out the bores. Look up 'lawnmower syndrome. This would also cause the issue you are seeing and not starting. If you check the cylinder compressions you will likely find them low, if not in all cylinders maybe 1 or more.
To try to get the car started, add maybe a teaspoon of oil to each cylinder and then refit the spark plugs and see if the car will start.
If it does, then you will need to look at the injectors for them leaking when the engine is switched off.

Thanks Neil! I got it running already. But I was concerned of the thick white smoke that was coming out of the tail pipe every time I changed oil. I saw it again when I cleaned the flame trap as my car was failing the glove test. The next day, and up to now, no more white smoke coming out the tail pipe. (After the flame trap cleaning now there's negative pressure when revving the engine but glove very slowly turns positive pressure when idling)
I have another problem, the oil warning light in the dash lights up intermittently. When it turns on, tappet noises can be heard in the engine bay. I may have to pull down that oil pan next if this warning light issue does not disappear.

The O-rings between the oil pan and block that feeds oil to the head fail with age. It may also be the oil pump seals failing as well.
Good Luck!
