It should drop into the space between the outer fender and the plastic liner. Short of removing the inner fender and if you have a front mudflap on that side, no easy way to get it.
You could try and see if you can wedge a flat blade screw driver at the bottom between the plastic and the metal fender and see if it will drop out. A magnet on an extending stick might help.

Can’t believe I’ve spend half a day on this and I’m not even halfway done.
Left side done:
- new strut
- new control arm
- new sway bar link
Left side not done:
- outer tie rod. Stuck as hell. Tried turning both ways. Going to replace inner and outer now. Just have to order the inner tie rods.
Right side is half disassembled and going to do:
- outer cv joint boot
- control arm
- inner and outer tie rod
- swaybar link

Great progress and it will all be worth while once you have got all the deferred maintenance and worn parts up-to-date!
Heat may help to separate the inner and outer tie rod, lots of it.
I have broken 2 x 1/2" breaker bars (yes they lived up to their names) trying to undo the hub nut on P80's. I now use an impact wrench but also have a 3/4" long breaker bar and socket just in case!

My P80 is the only vehicle I've ever had to remove an inner tie rod. I absolutely hate the perfectly smooth round design with no edges to put a wrench on it. I ended buying a tool that grabs the shape as you try to turn it but it wasn't small enough and I had to jam a pry bar into the tool at the same time. I wish I had bought one that has some kind of clamp to tighten. Good luck.Chieber wrote: ↑22 Dec 2025, 15:03 Can’t believe I’ve spend half a day on this and I’m not even halfway done.

Nuts go forward on the struts. Ok, I just made that up. That is how they come from the factory though…
Be thankful you have the two bolt control arms. The four bolts on the xc70 and awd models are a brutal job

I would consider myself, not seasoned, just moderately experienced with the p80 platform. But I had yet to do a timing job on one. Yesterday I completed 90% of my first timing kit job. I was not worried about the timing job (other than time restraint) before I started and I would not worry to do another. Of course I had to mess up in some way. Remember, this is my 1995 850. My plan is to take it to Dallas on the 26th or 27th.
Timing belt removed
. Right pulley removed
. Tensioner pulley removed
. The vice and cresent both were being rounded by the hardened t45 bit. Tensioner removed
. Water pump & gasket removed
. New water pump & gasket
. New tensioner w old round cap
. New right pulley
. Timed 10 times LOL
. Motor mount unbolt/lift for belt fit
. Belt gently coaxed on crank sprocket
. New belt fitted onto pulleys
. TOO SHORT. Turns out I skipped Robert Spinner's tip of CHECK BELT SIZE BEFORE INSTALL. This prompted a check on new belt part #. Yeah, the timing kit that I've had in storage for forever was for my 01 v70 (see sig below), not my first 98 xc.
Now I'm waiting on the new timing belt, new serpentine belt, and radiator petcock. Coolant is flushed and ready, reservoir cleaned out. Added windshield fluid. I already did an oil change. New oil cap seal. (Cam cover needs oil cleaned off) The fuel line from rail to cam cover was cracked and easy to replace. Now for that horn ground.....

I've installed the Yatour device to get Bluetooth in the car. It works fine. I've disconnected the iTunes equalizer on my phone. I got news front 13inches speakers from Pioneer, to see what happens. Poor quality. I've quickly reinstalled the OEM ones... Nothing to compare.

I’ve read that a large pipe wrench should do the trick. Can’t remember which tutorial it was.ZionXIX wrote: ↑22 Dec 2025, 18:47My P80 is the only vehicle I've ever had to remove an inner tie rod.
