under the impression that the oil sump to block was sealed with the orange (i believe elring el-liq 74, correct if wrong) anaerobic sealant, however i see no appreciable sign of it, is this what one would expect it to look like after 25 years on the mated surfaces? these pictures are as yet untouched/cleaned surfaces.
i have much higher resolution images if needed, just trying to be light on site/browser resources.

That looks about right, mine looked the same. I used permatex upon reinstallation, can't recall the part number but anaerobic sealant.

Yes, i used the Volvo stuff, only need a small bead. Used green scotchbright to clean surface and tiny foam roller for sealant. Make sure to clean out the oil pickup mesh.

With the sump dropped replace all the O-rings and gaskets with this kit
