1999 Volvo V70 GLT (P80) Central Locking, Fuel Door, and Hatch Failure

Post by Eyesiic »

Good Afternoon Fellow Brickers,

I've run into this pretty buggy issue with my '99 V70 GLT recently and I can't quite figure it out.

About 3 months ago, I noticed that the central locking was barely functional, working only partly (I.e. 2 or 3 doors) maybe 5% of the time - it didn't bother me much so I never really gave it two thoughts. Now a month ago, the fuel door release and the hatch release have stopped working. They both stopped working immediately after pulling the hatch release (it worked, then I hit it once more a few seconds later and nothing). I hear no actuators when I press the buttons - the central locking also now works none of the time. I've already poured so many hours into forum searching, so I figured I'd finally post.

Things I've already done:

Inspected and tested fuse #6 with a different known working fuse

Removed driver kick panel to reveal the absolute mess underneath. Not even sure how to troubleshoot what's under there (what I believe to be the CEM? among other things). I see no evidence of corrosion or water damage.

Removed all rear panelling to inspect hatch wires. Cut housing at all pressure points to find them all in good shape.

Removed driver's door panel to ensure hatch / fuel door connector was properly secured.

Sort of at a loss as my symptoms don't really match any other posts - I don't think it's a temp sensor in the actuators as that usually occurs in hot weather - and I don't think that would constitute total failure of the fuel door and hatch? Plus, I of course have to have the '99 which seems to be different electronically than every other damn P80 / P2 in the surrounding years. The car has 101k on the odometer and has been dealer serviced for its entire life up until my ownership (5 months ago). Any pointers would be incredible insight, thank you so much.

Isaac

I had a similar issue with the door locks - it was dirty contacts in the master switch, but no problems with the fuel door or hatch release.
The only thing that comes to (my feeble) mind that they have in common, is where the wiring passes through the door/jamb.

And Welcome !

As suggested, I would check the wiring at the driver's door connector where it leaves the connector to where it enters the door. At this age I have had to repair a few for wiring failures.

Hey thanks for the reply. Will most definitely check that next - I was able to see from underneath the driver kick panel where it enters the door jamb and it looked ok; however, I did also notice where the wires are routed through to the door and it does seem like a wear area. Will update as I move through solutions.

Good Luck. The wires to the A-pillar inside the car are not usually an issue unless someone has been in there doing stupid stuff. It is from the A-pillar through the flying lead into the front of the door the issues happen. They can break off at the pins or anywhere to where it enters the door.

I had this issue a few months ago, also on a 99. The wiring harness on my drivers side door was eaten through, and I had to fix a few broken connections that went into the drivers door control panel. Same symptoms as yours (Hatch release not working, intermittent central locking), but mine was causing fuse 6 to blow. I had to pull the entire wiring harness out of the door, as quite a length of it was hidden behind solid metal.
