Recurring P0101

Post by hu5ker555 »

2008 S60 2.5T 252k

A few months ago, I replaced all of the spark plugs. Runs very smoothly, with the exception of an occasional studder when accelerating on the highway. For having 252k miles, pretty happy.

That said, I do get a recurring P0101. I've been just clearing the code whenever it pops up, but it comes on a couple of times per week. Each time, I clear the code and then it comes back in a couple of days. I've cleaned the MAF, did resets by unplugging the battery overnight, etc. It just keeps coming back.

Should I replace the MAF?
Should I ignore the code and hope the computer will figure things out eventually?
Or just keep clearing the code every time?

It may or may not be the MAF. Have you cleaned it with MAF cleaner ever? Also check the connector is not corroded to the MAF connector.

The reading may not be due to the MAF at all but an air leak on the intake path to the engine. You may want to try and smoke the intake path and look for leaks.

Yes, I have cleaned the MAF with MAF cleaner. I have a smoke machine so might try that.

No, its almost always a tiny PCV hose under the intake manifold that needs to be replaced. The PCV job is the most intense DIY so you'd want to look into that, and to do the whole system is about $400 for parts and another $450 for labor for an indie last I checked.

Thanks Chris. I've done the PCV job myself before on another S60, nearly killed me. That one failed the glove test, the dipstick kept popping up, and it ran rough. My current vehicle passes the glove test, no dipstick issues, and runs pretty smooth.

Mine didn't have those issue neither, but it decided that the 4 crank seals was the weakest link and then it leaked oil from there.

It could also be a dirty throttle body, but in my case cleaning that a little got me through inspection only for the code to come back a few months later.

this., vac hose had 5 inch split.
I patched mine with fuel hose, the code never came back.

UPDATE. I found my smoke tester. The problem appears to be at the turbocharger/wastegate. Seems like it is immediately underneath the wastegate actuator and towards the turbocharger itself. Seems to be at the base/downstream end of the actuator. It's not the little rubber vacuum hose.

Anyone experience this before? Suggestions?

actuator diaphram is ripped, replace. re-set the wastegate preload.
it doesn't look like a huge leak.
