Stiff steering wheel in certain positions S60 2005

Post by nedqlkow »

Hello,
The car is a 2005 S60, with an automatic transmission, a 2.4 engine, 140 horsepower.

For some time now I have had a problem with a stiff steering wheel in certain positions (left or right turn of about 90 degrees, as shown in the pictures).

Since I know that steering u-joints, especially the one in the engine compartment, are often problematic in cars of my generation, in recent years I have conscientiously lubricated the U-Joint in question with liquid grease in a spray, which helped until now, but not this time - now even after lubrication, the stiffness remained, which tells me that the time for replacement has most likely come.

What I have noticed so far is the following:
1) The steering wheel becomes stiff in both positions, the rest of the time it feels normal. Once it reaches the corresponding position, more effort is required to go through it, then it gets better and so on until next time.

2) I have no leaks, loss of hydraulic fluid, strange noises, the steering wheel is not stiff all the time, but only in the mentioned positions.

3) The hydraulic pump has been replaced, along with the hydraulic fluid - I have not noticed any losses in the expansion tank.

My question is how do you replace the steering u joint and could someone tell me what the OEM number of the part is?

- I think the PN is in the photo below. Use genuine Volvo part only.

- If you are short of budget, then find a standard u-joint (I think it is 15x40mm type but check to be sure). This setup has no circlip, so it is similar to driveshaft staked u-joint. Use a C-clamp to press it out (brace the yoke ears with a piece of metal first). Once the new u-joint is in, re-stake it using a small-tip punch + hammer.

Budget is not a problem, I am willing to buy an original item, I love my car and do not want to compromise on quality.

When checking by VIN number, the number they provided me for the part is 3409939 - https://www.tascaparts.com/oem-parts/vo ... ft-3409939, which is different from the one in the screenshot.

Actually,

The u-joint replacement is easy if you have done it before (driveshaft etc.).
No compromise on quality.

However, it is easier to replace the entire thing.

I will replace it with a new part. It is not that pricy.

after disconnecting the u joint I'd test the steering wheel again for sticking points.

But as far as I understand, before detaching the u-joint column, the steering wheel must be locked and not turned until it is reattached, so as not to damage the SAS sensor.

Am I understanding correctly?

Don't spin it like a propellor, just feel for resistence within its range.
