1998 V70GLT

Post by 5sobs5 »

Hi everyone, my wagon has had a problem for about a week+. It started the day I gave another car a jump. The other car didn't start, so my car idled maybe 10 - 15 minutes. Later when I was driving over the pass, my car started to blink CELs. It turned out to be Code 301, "#1 cylinder missfire". I've subsequentlly replaced the plugs, distributor cap & rotor, then finally the wires. Each time it would again throw the CEL Code 301. I'm now stumped, and hope someone out there has ideas on what I do next. My car has 214,000 miles, but has run great until then. Thanks ahead for any help.

One thing comes to mind. Did you erase the code?

Could be your ignition coil on the side of the fender', in front of the air filter box...can you get a hold of another from a late model 850 or an S/V70 of the same year to see if there's a difference?

I did indeed replace the ignition coil with a used one off an '96 850. They both ohmed out "good", but I replaced it anyway. The new {old } one only had 131K miles so I considered it much newer.

See what would happen if you put the old, "old" one back on.

MIJ, tried that this morning. Still the same, triggers the "301 Code". Really baffled.

I guess next thing I would try is switching around the plugs to see if there is any difference. Btw, what ignition wire set and plugs did you buy? Bosch wires are known to have this type of problem as do Bosch platinum plugs.

MIJ, I replaced wires with OEM Volvo Bougicord. Plugs are Bosch, same as what came out. Klaus over at brickboard suggests compression test and wire tester. I guess I'll try that.
