I've had good success using foam tape on my 850 rattles. Ashtray and glove box.

Never had an issue with this. Is your glove box strut still working? It should slowly open and not "drop" when open. At times the connection between strut and glove box door is getting broken and it can cause rattle. Any chance any of the mounting screws are missing?

Thank you for all the suggestions! my glovebox is functioning correctly. it latches closed, and opens with a tug on the handle. yes, something could be loose, but I think it's coming from the latch on the glovebox door and the U shaped loop on the dash. part of it seems to be worn, as if it's been vibrating and filing it down. I think some weatherstripping would help
