99 V70XC ejector/sender & gas draining suggestions? Topic is solved

Ok. Need to find a way to get 15 gallons out of gas tank to replace fuel pump AGAIN !!

To install Vast pump, I need to drain the total around 15 gallons or around 8 gallons?
I don't want to spill the gas, but not going to be easy not to unless the way I plan works correctly. Since the first fuel pump replacement (cutout & spliced in. at the time it had between 6 to 7 gallons). I took 5 gallons out and was able to replace the pump that only lasted 4 miles.
After the replacement, I added total of 15 gallons. Then, fuel gauge didn't go up that much and stopped at close to 7.
So, my guess is that the ejector/sender also need replacement.

On the fuel pump, right tube is connected to left tube of the sender. So, If I can find a tube that is same/similar diameter to fit into that fuel line connector, I was thinking about siphoning off the left tank first as long as the sender is like in the picture on this thread.

I will have to check other threads to see if there is a way to siphon from one of the 2 tubes on fuel pump.

Any other suggestions?

Also, I may follow the instruction based on this thread post #3 for the sender. Still trying to figure out how to get it out. Cut out like fuel pump?

Based on search 9470840 is the sender, but FCP only lists PPS again. Is it "JUNK" also? Any substitutes?

How difficult it is to remove the filler neck? I am not sure of this model has build in antisiphon or screens inside the filler neck. Maybe some members can advice here. If filler neck is just a "simple tube with valve" i would use electric fluid transfer pump(i think I paid 35 on amazon) and suction it out through the attached neck. If neck has screens and antisiphon, then I would attempt to remove the filler neck and get it sucked through large hole. In any situation, transfer pump will make your life easier even with pump replacement. Ofcourse, well ventilated area, no sparks...

It appears to have a device not allowing to siphon from filler tube.
Red circle. When I first tried to siphon it through filler tube, I couldn't get any out.

See other thread. It has a really effective anti siphon and the filler tube can’t be removed without dropping the whole back axle.

You cannot suck out the crossover pipe as it only discharges at the top of the pump

I think you will have crack the big nut and drain into a big container and mess with that Into safe containers.

No smoking , open flames, sparks, grinders ..unless the have roast beef and cheese

Connect a pipe to the fuel rail and jumper the fuel pump relay and drain the majority out of the tank.

Plastic tank and no drain.

Draining that tank is going to suck. Try to do it on a 60 F day or at night.

Actually I think Neil might have a point here. What if the pump is "stuck". It cost nothing to bridge fuel pump relay and try to tap around plastic nut with a rubber hammer. If it will start pumping- great. If not- hey you tried.

Good point! On our 2000 V70R, there is a Shraeder valve above the rear axle on the RHS. I wonder if it is possible to use a simple electric pump and still draw down the fuel level without the pump running. Will it pull the gas through the pump even if it is dead?

Only other option is to drop the tank by making up a support frame to take the load using a floor jack or a jack with a transmission support on it and then remove the pump and draw the gas out using an external pump. You will have to do that on both sides of the tank.

Yes, no easy way. Fortunately when I did it, it was a planned removal so I could run the tank down to a low level.

the pump gets full battery voltage. not even humming.. However, I will check everything mentioned here before going with what abscate mentioned above.

use a floor jack with 2x4 to support right side tank. Undo the fuel tank strap. lower the tank a little.
place a flat container with lid under the tank. go back to cutout under the rear seat & disconnect 2 fuel connectors & loosen the fuel pump lock ring.
pull the pump slightly to slow the drain/spill. once the fuel level is low enough, I will pull the fuel pump out and put new one in. probably splice the wires again.

I still haven't ordered a new sender yet. do we really only have the PPS sender? 9470840 at FCP shows as a pump.
Still can't figure out how the fuel flow through on this.
