The 2006 XC70 2.5L is reaching that magic number of 1L of oil per megameter that Volvo set for acknowledging a problem (! - seems all my RWD cars had much more reasonable oil consumption expectations).
Anyway, over the past few years I went over the PCV system twice and just last year verified that it was breathing freely, also been poking around the turbo to make sure it isn't that (turbo should be smoke on acceleration though, and lots of oil in the inlet, which it is not) so it looks like valve seals (massive clouds of smoke after running down hills with closed throttle, now seems it's worse enough to where sometimes the seal will slip at idle too and a cloud of smoke will billow forth).
Big question - since this is apparently a plan-on-12-hours job what else should I be looking at while I have the cylinder head apart? Car is about 230k miles.
Thoughts on the pneumatic method vs the stuff-it-with-rope method to hold the valves in place?
Should I plan on the seals also going soon on the 2001 V70 with 250K and my parents' '07- is this a all modular engines issue or is this just a "this car" or "this year" issue?
2006 XC70 likely valve seals - what else to look at

Maybe worth looking at this thread I am working on. In there are are some of the guys suggestions for 'while you are in there' work. As you feel the PCV is good, then you could potentially ignore that work. I would take the opportunity, if you plan to keep the car for a while, to consider the oil o-ring and de-sludge as well as the oil return tube clean from the PCV to the oil pan.

The PCV return was a mess... I pushed a wire through it to open it back up but might be good to look from the bottom.
What has happened to the valve seal supply? None of my usual suspects have the Volvo 272424 set, just onesies or the aftermarkets, and while you can find Elring or Reinz I dont' know if I trust them.

GCP.se has the sets of 272424. However, I was looing at this for a 06 S60 2.5T motor, and was told by Volvo those kits are only for earlier engines up to around 18XXXXX numbers. Beyond that the exhaust and intake are different art numbers. No idea why unless it was because of valves burning due to oil seepage possibly?

At 250k seals are likely reaching end of life but they do give plenty of warning. Good quality synthetic oil helps extend this.
My v70 R engine reached 250k and burned a valve but didn’t need stem seals for oil burning at least
