SRS Reset

Post by petek153 »

Ouch, was replacing bulbs for the check engine light (due to state emmisions program)and forgot to plug in the passenger air bag before hooking battery back up. Is there a way to reset this or is a trip needed to the volvo shop and empty my wallet again. 96 850 200,000 mi and counting.

JRL is right about this for the most part...
There is however one piece of software that I know of that will work...it's called the VOL-FCR. If you do a google search you will find it. You might also find a download (I believe a Torrent) of it which would be free (hint, hint), but you would still need a special cable and a laptop with a serial connector. If you decide to go this way (and find the software), I can help you locate the right cable (USB won't work) from eBay.

Sorry to butt in to your thread, but maybe you could offer some insight to my problem.

Vehicle is a 2005 S40. My wife drives it - treats it like a baby (and I maintain it per the book). About 2 weeks ago the SRS warning light came on. There were no accicdents, hard bumps, nothing to cause a deployment.

Long story short; while in the car the other night - scratching my head and trying to figure this out - I noticed that the seatbelt warning light was NOT illuminated. Goes without saying that I was in the drivers seat, engine running and did not have the belt in the buckle. The little man with the strap across his chest should have been illuminated, right?

He doesn't come on anymore and the SRS (bubble guy) is always on. My question is; are the two circuits interfaced? In other words does the SRS circuit encompass more than just the airbags, specifically does that circuit monitor the seatbelt switches as well?

The answer to your question is a resounding yes....and they are interfaced. It could be any part of the airbag system that has developed an open circuit. There is a mylar piece inside your steering wheel for instance that has a wire running through it...it winds and unwinds with your steering wheel turning...on my 850, years ago, that part broke and the same thing happened. Are you still under a warranty period? If so, take your car to the dealer for diagnostics.

Normally I would move this post to the correct part of the forum (S/V40's) but because your issue also applies to the vehicles in this part of the forum, I'll leave it here for now. My suggestion is for you to post this same thing in your part of the forum in case there are some differences in your vehicle over those in this part of the forum.

Re-posted under the appropriate forum. Thanks for the heads-up. Got fooled by the lead-in page. Kind of confusing - shows V40/S40 up top. Upon closer inspection I see that I jumped to the 850 forum.

But as you suggest, this may be an across-the-board issue, so I will leave this up as well.

To articulate my question more fully; Since the seatbelt warning light does not come on, when in fact it should be screaming at me, would this send a malfunction signal to the SRS. I would assume that the SRS (since it stands for Safety Restraint System) takes input from the seatbelt circuit rather than the other way around.

The question at it's simplest; what could make the seatbelt light not illuminate, when in fact it should be. People spend hours trying to nullify this alarm, but I want it to work.

It is a closed circuit, therefore even with Volvo's scan too, my understanding is that it's hard to diagnose exactly where the break may be. Any broken part will cause the circuit to be "open," causing the SRS light to come on, including the seat belt (which is separate than the input to the seat belt receptacle) but still over-ridden by the SRS light.
