Did you happen to get a recall letter in the last few months about smelling gas since the gas tank may leak? Go to aVolvo dealer and they will inspect your gas tank. If it shows signs of leakage, they will replace the tank. Otherwise, as in my case, and why am I not surprised (afterall they are part of Ford now), they said there was no sign of leakage, they simply put some washers on the screws/bolts holding the gas tank to the "heat exchanger"? or whatever. I noticed they didn't give me my recall letter back after the fact so I don't have it in front of me but it does explain the work on the free-of-charge dealer service receipt/repair order. I am impressed that I even got a letter though, considering I wasn't the original owner [bought the '94 850 used in '98] but I had taken it to the dealer a few times for service before I couldn't afford to anymore. ; ) Have smelled gas on and off in the cabin for the past year and a half but that obviously is not the cause, or so they say.

I may sound a little bitter in these posts but I have put a boatload of money into this car in the last 2 years to solve the original, while-travelling, stall problem, a $500 tune-up (no effect) and replacing the CMP sensor which solved it and then new rocker arms or whatever because front tires wouldn't last a year and then the gas smell and now stalling out when decelerating problem. Oh, I forgot the new water pump where the slow leak just got too bad eventually , and timing belt (while they had it apart for the WP, it was recommended time for that)

A car should just not cut out on the driver. /rant over. Why, oh why did I pick this car over the used Camry!!!

When your PCV clogs... crankcase fumes can escape at your dipstick and then travel into your cab... I'm dealing with that as we speak.

Doing the oil trap etc this weekend.

Also may be worth checking your EGR?

Starman,
You may be ultra-sensitive to CO or other "bad air". I have had two vehicles (out of 20+ that I have owned) that I had trouble driving because the odor or air quality gave me headaches and made me dizzy. One was a Ford van 10 years ago and the other was a 98 Toyota Tacoma last year. My wife rode in both and never complained of any problem. I traded in the van and sold the Tacoma back to Toyota in their buyback for frame rust. I never found out in either case what caused the problem. I tried a CO monitor in the Tacoma but it didn't detect a problem. There were no obvious exhaust leaks in either case and the Tacoma definitely had no oil leaks. I suspected some kind of clog in the intake air, but Toyota made their buyback offer before I did much checking. As general interest, Toyota took an entire generation (95-2000) of Tacomas in the Rust Belt off the road last year.
