1998 S70, 287K miles
Intermittent bucking and code P0103. Really hard to start.
Replaced MAF sensor and cleared code.
Code P0103 sets again at rpm under ~2500. Keep rpm up or under load (going up long hill) and system runs fine. Suspect Idle control valve or vacuum leak. Any ideas?

P0103 is a MAF sensor circuit high. That can be either a bad MAF sensor, a bad connection to the MAF sensor, or a broken wire between the MAF and the ECU. Make sure the connector is good...plug and unplug it several times. Also, disconnect the battery for 20 minutes (make sure you have your radio code) to reset the adaptives. If this doesn't work, what MAF sensor did you buy?

More testing shows intermittent fault in either the MAF wiring or the OBC. I doubt it's the OBC. Found Volvo TSB on MAF connector/wiring. Will ohm it out Friday and solder in new wires, as necessary. Will post results over the weekend.

Hi Lloyd,
I'm having similar issues with my 98 S70 T5 -- do you recall what your resolution was for this issue?

Replaced MAF sensor with a rebuilt sensor ( check engine light came on ) Took my 1998 S70 to the volvo dealer. After they checked the car they told me that the sensor was bad.Replaced sensor with another rebuilt sensor. Still the same problem ( check engine light came on ) Dealer told me forsure it was the MAF sensor.Does anybody know if there is a big diffence between a new MAF sensor or a rebuilt one ? Just wondering if anybody faced this problem Thanks Goldy

Rebuilt? Never heard of one. Our cars are rather picky about their MAF, so it's best to go with a Bosch which is OEM:
