OBD II code 0172

Post by getagripatlanta »

I have a 1996 Volvo 960. The OBD II code is reading Code 0172, bank 1 is too rich. What do you think may be the problem?

Thanks for any help.

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

P0172 equates to Volvo code 2-3-1 which is a possible problem with the Lambda probe, otherwise known as the heated oxygen sensor.

The control unit receives info from the oxygen sensor on the fuel/air mixture - too rich or too lean - and compensates by adjusting the mixture. If the compensation becomes excessive a fault code is set.

There are some checks on the sensor that the DIY person can do but they are basic. To test it fully requires a measuring unit.

If this is the first time the code has been set I would erase the code and see if it returns. It may have been a one off.
