What's Causing Your 850 Stall?
Jason, thanks for the feedback. If you look in my first post you'll see i've done just about all that you have mentioned aside from the coolant temperature sensor. Going out of my mind, i've double and even tripled checked the vacuum tree, throttle body, and idle air valve, etc & they all are very clean. I've also replaced the fuel pump relay to no avail. But once again, thank you for your input. I cannot get rid of this car, I've put too much into it, mentally, physically, and emotionally. I may have found a trustworthy mechanic who works on nothing but imports. when i called this morning to explain the issues, he gave me some things to check before i even bring it to him (Let's see the dealer do that!). His recommendation was to pull the emeregency brake, have sumone in the car hold the brake down and to then give the car gas until the rpms trigger the BOOST Guage (its a turbo). Then, while they keep car at boost, he told me to keep a close eye on the intercooler (as it "expands" when boosting) for a crack(s) or air leak. im not too familiar with that area, but i'll do my due dilligence, give it a shot, and post back my experience. He said if i dont see anything, he'll do a smoke test and use nitrogen to officially check for a crack in the intercooler. Just wanted to update my progress, thank all once again for your support.

Just pull the throttle cable and rev it yourself. It's how I found a popped off air hose at night at a gas station. In my case I heard the air sucking through the hose. I would have never found this without the sound from varying the RPMs while standing in front of the engine.smigg21 wrote:His recommendation was to pull the emeregency brake, have sumone in the car hold the brake down and to then give the car gas until the rpms trigger the BOOST Guage (its a turbo). Hey Smigg21, Know what you mean about the dealerships! Very expensive for little help. All the research I have done tells me that they dont know how to fix this recurring problem for us. I think I forgot to tell you about the mass air meter? I bought by '94 850 wagon non turbo for $160.00 from a friend and he was honest about the stalling problem but for that money I thought what the heck why not? So after about $1300.00 in parts and some labor from a mechanic friend of mine I have finally got my car running with no issues for about two weeks now. Have been thinking of putting a chip in to increase the horsepower and torque. Good luck, Jason

I have an 1995 850 Turbo with 130K miles. I also had the problem with stalling. I got the solution from another forum. The vacuum elbow (part number 9155862) that is located behind the power steering pump was disconnected altogether (brittle). I replaced it and she runs like a top again. Thought this might help someone.
I have been driving a 94 850 turbo for the past five years. Needless to say ive had some stalling issues from time to time. These are the things that have caused my car to stall over the years.
- coolant temp sensor. Car ran rich missfired and stalled.
- Cracked elbow on vacume hose going to fuel pressure reg..
- maff sensor, car would stall when put into gear.
I also recently had an issue with my car running rich and it was linked to the front 02 sensor. It wasn't stalling though. Im sure all of these suggestions have been posted but if u have any questions don't hesitate to ask.

I drive a 96 volvo 850 non-turbo and recently had the same symptoms of stalling randomly. The only code check i had was slow o2 sensor response, I just wanted to know if you had any updates on your problem. I have taken steps and nothing has worked, however I recently spoke to a mechanic who drives the same car and said he knew exactly what the problem was. Being a volvo mechanic he did not tell me what it was but he would be glad to solve the problem and "restart" my computer for a hundred dollars, im tight for money right now so ill be patient. Just hoped you may have found something.

Stuff like that just pegs my Bullshit meter.he would be glad to solve the problem and "restart" my computer for a hundred dollars
Check the leads from your RPM sensor which is located on the top of the bellhousing for proximity to the ignition wires. Use a ty-wrap and fold the sensor wires away from the coil wire and any spark plug wire and see if things improve.
Clean your MAF with MAF cleaner. Don't scrub it or even touch it. Just spray the stuff on and let it dry. Check your spark plugs and even more important the plug gap, it should be no more than 0.028", error on the low side. Check every thing for vacuum leaks. If your throttle body is filthy clean it.

Damn right it does....Clean MAF sensor in january when the first stalling ever started happening. I put new plugs in during the summer and they gapped right then. Never thought of the RPM sensor, but I will check it. Any visible vacuum lines or pumps were checked or replaced. I picked up a Haynes the other day and they stressed the importance of the charcoal canister and pumps in the EVAP system. Cleaned throttle body and vacuum tree, idle pump is new. I bypassed a smog pump that was working now it is. When it does stall it feels like vacuum pressure is now being released properly as the rpm's drop. But besides RPM sensor are there any other ideas?
Well, My two cents worth would be to try clamping off vacuum lines and see if it makes a difference to idle quality. Of particular interest would be, vacuum line to brake booster, vacuum line to evap-system. Booster hose is a no brain-er.Vacuum line to evap system should be clamped off between manifold and vacuum control valve mounted on radiator. I replace these vacuum valves quite often. Don't know if it will help, but it's worth 5 minutes to find out.
